The one thing NOT to do in the Lotus pose

Показать описание
The Lotus pose is one of the poses most identified with yoga.
Some practitioners perform it rather easily, but for most, the external rotation range in the hip joint is not sufficient to get into the pose.

A risky chain reaction starts occurring in the knee when the hip ceases to rotate, and it is the most important thing to be aware of when practicing or teaching this pose in a safe way.

Watch the video to see what it is.

We created the YOGA app with Dr. Gill Solberg to assist you as much as we can! The knowledge in these areas will enable teachers to work with confidence, from a well-grounded understanding of body movement, which
will help avoid causing harm as the result of an inappropriate yoga practice.

THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT INFORMATION! In 2009 I took a yoga teachers training program. On the last day of the course, the instructor forced my knee and hip in the manner described in your video. My right medial meniscus "popped" out of position with a loud noise, heard by all 12 people in the class. I could see a lump under the skin, and when I straightened my leg the lump slid back into place. Strangely enough this did not hurt...much. Fast forward to 2021, I no longer practice yoga, and I am in the queue for a knee replacement.

As a meditator who aspires to get to this posture one day, I've never been explained on this physiology aspect. This video was great, thanks a lot!!!

Thank you for the video. Please understand that the lotus pose is not appropriate for all yogis. If the hips and femur don't have the necessary rotation and no amount of stretching, even appropriate stretching, will change the nature of the yogis skeleton. Instructors, it is important to understand this about your students!

I`ve tried to get into padmasana for nearly 40 years and never managed. I have genetically tight ligaments and tendons unfortunately. As a result I suffer very bad lower back pain from the gradual tightening as I get older. I would dearly love to get into this posture and felt great relief just watching the young lady performing the stretching posture at 2:24 here in this video. Thank you for posting this

I was practicing half lotus for a while but learned I have a torn meniscus (from snowboarding and old age). Yoga has strengthened my knee and I haven’t had surgery. I have stopped doing half lotus and just try to increase mobility carefully in poses like pigeon.

I was able to do this too easily for my first time, and had to check if I was actually doing it correctly. I guess I just had the correct bone structure for it.

Even Pigeon pose stresses the hip and knee too much. Yoga postures aren’t necessarily a good or perfect thing. They are invented by people. Be smart about what you expect of your body!

Before trying padmasana you should be able to perform "baddha konasana" fully. It will open any tightness in hip joints. In yoga, it is strictly recommended to be fully trained for baddha konasana before padmasana. 🙂
