I'll save everyone time, heartache and money. Just get Irwin Visegrip Groovelock pliers. Not only are they incredibly convenient to use, they last a long time. They have fine adjustments too so you can get just the right fit. I use them almost every work day. Standard channel locks are an abomination.

Just DON’T buy cheap. Channelock, Klein, even Milwaukee are not terribly expensive. You’ll have them forever unless you loan them to a neighbor. Mistakenly called slip-joint pliers — slip-joint is your regular classic plier that has two “settings”, normal and wide, and by the way 99% have wire cutting for up to steel-hanger-type wire. Very useful. Tongue and groove is the right term and is what earned Channelock the patent. Look closely and you’ll see the two plier halves have grooves with undercuts that engage each other for strength. Get a toothed jaw and a smooth jaw so you’re not buggering up a nice plumbing fitting or nut/bolt. For real care put tape on the smooth jaw so as not to scratch chrome plating or paint. If your pliers get loose tighten the nut until you get the tension you want then place on some kind of steel plate or vise with the nut side up and peen the bolt by hitting it with a hammer (preferably ball peen) until the bolt is mushroomed over enough to keep the hinge bolt and nut together without loosening. And, love your wrenches from time to time with some 3-in-1 oil or WD-40. Wipe off excess. A rust covered tool is messy, the jaws get dull and rust does not elevate your macho factor. Plumbers will disagree. Okay. BTW my KLEINS are 40+ years old and my 3 $$ Knipex are younger. The 150mm Cobra is my No. 1 tool. For light plumbing and EMT conduit fittings, etc., the jaw geometry is genius. Always Cobras and an 11 way screwdriver and Nebo or Streamlight flashlight in my back pockets when I ring a new customer’s doorbell. Can you tell I love Tool World?

Please! If you know what you're doing and take care of it, a cheap pair will last a long time.
SOME FOLKS JUST DON'T KNOW HOW TO TAKE CARE OF AND USE TOOLS CORRECTLY.

Number one rule when looking at new highest quality pliers you can't get. You're not going to do any better than Knipex. Snap-on has a few great pliers as well.
