The Fabelmans - Why Movies Matter

🎬 In this FilmSpeak video essay we discuss Why Steven Spielberg is still the best with our review of The Fabelmans! The Fabelmans is why movies matter, perfect and gets to the heart of Why Spielberg Makes Movies.

From the deepest wells of his heart, Spielberg brings us The Fabelmans, his semi-autobiographical ode to this thing that he so dearly adores, set in two worlds: the world of discovery he grew up in, cinematic discovery in particular, where he realized that this was what he would love for the rest of his life, where the technical and visual aspects of his own images were informed; but also the world of the tumultuous domestic dynamic he grew up in, an affair and, later, divorce which often informed the text that would have life breathed into it by the other world.

The Fabelmans unearths the need for Spielberg to make movies. On top of being enamored by the spectacle of it all, it offers him a sense of control when everything in his life is out of his control - the divorce, the moves, the affair, his father’s disapproval of his path, bullying, girlfriend. When the lights go down and the projector begins to whirr for however long the picture is, Spielberg has us in the palm of his hands. He feels what he wants us to and sees people as they truly are, their secrets, their insecurities. When Sammy or Steven point a camera in your direction, you’re exposed because those little details, the parts of life that often go overlooked in cinema are the parts that make his movies soar. It’s what moves people. He points the camera, moves the camera with such fluidity such direction and intimacy so as not to lose the humanity of it all regardless of how complex the scene is. And then, he stitches it all together. At first, cutting out the pain, the uglier parts only to realize that lingering, being honest and baring your soul for an audience, while painful, is what makes art - his art - as powerful as it is. Creating is the most difficult thing a person can do and not everyone can do it. It takes sacrifice, people will judge you, try to deter you, call it a hobby or child’s play, call you selfish for leaving your family and friends, everyone you know and love to put you and your artistic quest first. And when your alone, drawing upon your pain, emotions, experiences, memories, to fuel your art, it’ll cut deeper than ever before, but the end result will be the most beautiful, moving thing you’ve ever created and it’s this emotional catharsis that’s all within control of the artist which is then transferred to an audience. Spielberg’s been doing that his whole life, it’s why his films are so honest and sincere. They’re filled with awe and splendor but at the core, what allows them to resonate with an audience, is the human element, the Spielberg experience that so many of us relate to.

For awhile, I've had doubts about why I wanted to be a filmmaker. The Fabelmans reawakened my love for filmmaking and made me realize that creating art is a noble path worth pursuing.

Born in '75 and so lucky to have grown up with Spielberg's incredible films. His passion for making films is still so evident and has never lessened. Can't wait to see The Fabelmans when it comes out in the UK this month. Thankyou for this video essay.

I had a realization the other day that almost all of my favorite films are Spielberg films. Like, it had literally never occurred to me. Truly the GOAT.

The scene where young Sammy puts his hands as a makeshift screen, aiming the projector at his open palms was the most iconic and unique shot of the movie. I would love to try that with my projector, Spielberg is so genius in making that scene

I haven't finished the video yet, but I just have to say thank you for mentioning Powell and Pressburger in the same breath as Hitchcock, Welles, and Ford! So underappreciated.

I’ve already seem the film TWICE, and gonna see it again, it’s already one of my comfort movies especially as someone whose coming from a similar situation. I really love this movie, from the themes of family, to following your dreams, to the love of film; I just wanna thank Spielberg for opening his story to us after years of telling other stories, it’s about time we got a film about the man behind the camera and it’s extraordinary.

I really liked this movie. I cried and laughed. This was maybe the funniest movie all year, and it wasn't even a comedy. And the sad scenes really got me too.

I just saw The Fabelmans, and man… what a picture. Spielberg’s most personal film and one that I think kind of defines his entire career and I think it’s fascinating that he’s making a film like this at this time in his life, like Scorsese making The Irishman at the age of 77. Not that there is a huge overlap, but the fact that Scorsese made a moving story about age and the ravages of time and Spielberg made a sentimental look back at his childhood.

Steven Spielberg is the only director nowadays I bother to watch every single new movie he does. I grew up with its timeless classics and every word you said in this video is 100% accurate. Problem is the rest of the industry nowadays is mostly about deshumanization.... cgi visual orgies and movies that look more like high end videogames than anything else. Spielberg and Williams are the last artists who put the person before the techcnology. Loved The Fabelmans.

Steven Spielberg is my favourite film director. And I think that’s for his epic range as a filmmaker. In one year, he can dazzle us and put us in such awe and wonder over special effects in a fun adventure story, and then turn around and bring us to tears with a beautifully sad true tale of the Holocaust. I don’t think even Martin Scorsese or Alfred Hitchcock had that for me. Is there any other filmmaker out there who could do Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can and Bridge of Spies and make them all such brilliant films? He’s also had his hands in many of the most beloved film franchises ever, Star Wars, Back To The Future, the guy even helped directed scenes for The Wolf Of Wall Street.

It’s amazing to see how he’s defined several eras of film in this regard. He’s an old style director, but his ability to sell his films has definitely inspired younger people to see his work. I think that’s the secret to his success, his films are crowd pleasers, unlike a Director like Scorsese, who’s made, like, three films that were genuine financial successes (tragic).

I’m really excited for The Fabelmans. In my country, the UK, it doesn’t release until January and it’s probably my most anticipated film for that month at least. I’m also excited for the Spielberg-produced “Untitled Fifth Indiana Jones Film” though I’m sad that Spielberg isn’t directing it.

I saw the Fabelmans during the Christmas break. I remember seeing the trailer on Facebook and making the quick decision to see it by myself. I loved it so much that I brought my aunt and uncle to see it a second time. We were the only three in the theater at the time.

The Fabelmans spoke to me as an artist. I've always loved making art, whether through drawing, writing, and photography. Art has always been a passion of mine, but like Sammy Fabelman most people think it's just a hobby. I'm currently in college right now studying art. I'm thinking about writing a paper on it for my English class. We're supposed to be writing an analysis on a movie.

One of my favorite Steven Spielberg films would be Duel. I saw Duel on an episode of the show Svengoolie and it blew my mind.

I cry sometimes. When I watch this. Learning about Spielberg's life. Reminds me of my life. Everyone thinks I'm crazy. My biggest fan is my mom. Still fighting for the dream. I remember. Seeing Jurassic Park at the theaters for the first time. I was a kid. The dinosaurs looked real. Spielberg is the best.
