Kind of agree because some businesses gradually dump too many responsibilities onto one person and once they leave it's impossible to fill that role with just one person.

I had a client of a major company once (a 5th generation CEO), Who told me that after he took over.. he began to see about working on buying out the few remaining family members. He quickly realized that "What's good for the company is good for the family. But what's good for the family isn't always good for the company." One of the smartest things I'd ever heard.

Fair enough. But don’t complain when workers leave you for something that fits them better. Do what is best for the company but expect people to do what is best for themselves and their families.

People mess this up all the time in business. Trying to keep everyone happy will always lead to isolating everyone

Great advice. Do what is needed to run the company. Then put in place the people that fit that structure.

Two different styles based on what kind of things people value. Your beliefs are a big part of your message and your company, when people apply they know that and value that.
Other people prefer a work place with a more "professional/corporate' feel. Personal lives and personal beliefs are left at home and the job is the focus. You may not like the person you work with or agree with their beliefs but you will respect them as a co-worker to have common goals.

It's not really a good/bad thing, it's a chocolate/vanilla thing

Jim Collins book “Good to Great” analysis which publicly traded companies make a profound leap. They came up with the exact opposite conclusion. Putting the right people in place first, has had better success.

Another approach is to build the company that causes the best version of yourself to develop. It requires being authentic to engage the type of customers you can do your best work for.

Exactly! Watch who you put in the seat and measure their output. Many employees that I have seen pretend that their working only when the boss walks past then sit back on the internet and get paid for nothing.

I agree but only once a sufficient size. Startups know all too well. Up until you gave most functions covered structure has to be more adaptable than rigid structure and you need to use skills as the arise across the team more dynamically

Yes, to an extent. That seat you create needs to be flexible enough to allow for the unanticipated skills that the employee brings that are of benefit to the company. A successful company is about managing change, not fighting it.

One of the most successful buisnessmen I know, every year asks each employee what is one item that will make working for him easier for them

For some of them, it's being able to arrive 15 mins late, for some it's being able to use company tools on home projects, some want higher pay. He doesn't always give them what they want immediately but he always gives a path that he makes sure to follow through on. One employee was a great worker, but had issues handling money. He bought that guy a $6000 car so he could reliably be there, even though he had terrible credit and couldn't replace his current POS car as he could figure out how to save up.

That employer is also a Christian, and veiws each of his employees as an individual soul, something Dave should do but doesn't always seem to convey.

I saw this at a company once. Not for a specific person but for a group. Not going to go into detail with that but what was happening was they favored them. Me and a few other people felt isolated/alienated. Like if we treid showing them a better or easier way of doing it. And thet person disagreed with use we were automatically wrong snd almost punished.

In ISO one of the first hurdles in initial training is to emphasize processes performance instead of individual talents. Can’t run a process that or build depth that way.

It’s so sad that a lot of companies design the company around individuals and when the individual leaves there is an issue
