Why Italy and Sicily are not connected by a bridge ?
This gap between Mainland Italy and Sicily is called the Strait of Messina and it’s only 3 kilometers wide at its narrowest point. The main reason the bridge was never built is that this area is a very active seismic zone, two of the biggest Europe’s volcanos being located in this region.
Second reason is that many people think that this is just a waste of public founds. The North Italy being massively richer then the South, this investment in the region is not considered to be worth it.
In 2023, Italy’s government agreed to the 12 billion euros project and decided to build the bridge. It will connect Sicily to the southern Calabria region and would be around 5 kilometers long including a central span measuring 3.3 kilometers becoming the longest suspension bridge in the world.
