Description:

In this video we'll have a look on Italy and why mainland Italy is not connected to Sicily by a bridge. In fact, the Strait Of Messina between the two is only 3 kilometers wide at its narrowest point and much longer bridges were built in other places in Europe. So why there is no bridge between Italy and Sicily.
Well, you'll have to watch the video in order to find out. We will cover all the aspects, so make sure you don't miss it.
Feel free to write your opinion about this in the commnets.
Hope you'll enjoy the video!

Why Italy and Sicily are not connected by a bridge ?
This gap between Mainland Italy and Sicily is called the Strait of Messina and it’s only 3 kilometers wide at its narrowest point. The main reason the bridge was never built is that this area is a very active seismic zone, two of the biggest Europe’s volcanos being located in this region.
Second reason is that many people think that this is just a waste of public founds. The North Italy being massively richer then the South, this investment in the region is not considered to be worth it.
In 2023, Italy’s government agreed to the 12 billion euros project and decided to build the bridge. It will connect Sicily to the southern Calabria region and would be around 5 kilometers long including a central span measuring 3.3 kilometers becoming the longest suspension bridge in the world.

Ancient Roman Republic: We will build this bridge soon, don’t worry

2000 Years later

Italy: We still haven’t build this bridge?

As an Italian I can say it will be ready in years

This bridge is a meme and this is like the 20th government has been talking about building the bridge

I’m Italian and living in Sicily. Nobody wants the bridge to be built and the disgusting government we have (which we know has clearly made deals with the mafia to build the bridge) is using its construction as propaganda. Building it would be extremely dangerous given the seismic activity and basically useless, as there already are plenty of ferries which only take 15-20 minutes to get to Calabria and are pretty cheap, and its construction will have a dramatic and very destructive impact on the environment of the project area. In addition to that, imagine spending 12 billion euros in a project that dangerous while Sicily is the second worst connected region in the country; a train from Palermo to Messina (the distance is around 220 km) takes at least FIVE HOURS to arrive, and going by car, despite being the fastest way, is extremely tiring due to the total lack of maintenance of the highway system (and you’ll also have to pay a toll!).

As an Italian there's a saying "I'll do it when the bridge to Messina is built!" which pretty much means when pigs fly in America 😂

I’m Sicilian and I can tell you that we don’t want it.
- is not safe
- it’ll cost too much
- the majority of the residents of that area will lose their home
- it would take at least 1-2 years to build it
- Sicily and Calabria have other big problems to resolve instead, like railways and highways
-and last but not least, mafia and other Assosiation will make money from this

In conclusion, I suggest you to search on internet the project and read all of the details (it will be higher than tour Eiffel and longer than golden bridge)

As an Italian, I can proudly say that my father❤ swimmed across that strait with handcuffs

Fun fact: emperor Caligula actually built a bridge of boats over the straits and crossed it, as a way to mock a soothslayer that said "you will become empreor just like you will cross the messna straits by walking"

Ancient Romans and Greeks considered this strait Chardydis and Skylla

Japan is a very active seismic and volcanic zone too, yet they have great infrastructure and bridges.

There's a joke here in Italy that goes like this:
"Continental drift united Italy and Sicily"
"What? we were just about to build the bridge!"

Italy 🇮🇹: Looks like I still can't make a bridge through Sicily.
France 🇫🇷: But why?
Italy 🇮🇹: Firstly, this region has 2 active volcanoes.
United Kingdom 🇬🇧: So that means all the most active volcanoes in Europe are in you?
Italy 🇮🇹: Yes. Also, my north side is even richer than the rest of me.
Germany 🇩🇪: Because of those 3 cities right?
Italy 🇮🇹: Yes. Called the Industrial Triangle.
Spain 🇪🇸: So transporting money is the only problem right?
Italy 🇮🇹: Yes. But my government decided to build it anyways.
Portugal 🇵🇹: But what about those disadvantages you've said?!
Italy 🇮🇹: Yes. Even it's a waste of money for tourist attraction, but still it would help those people in Sicily! And this bridge will become the longest suspension bridge in the world!
United Kingdom 🇬🇧: Wait! Even longer than our bridge to connect me to France?!
Italy 🇮🇹: No. I mean suspension bridge.
France 🇫🇷: Oh we get it now.
THE END :D

As a sicilian I can can tell: we don't want the bridge!

It will cost a lot not just in terms of public found, but more in environment pollution.

Not considering the precarious condition of our roads and train lines. Many urgent work are required not the bridge.

I'm sicilian and i think that before building this bridge, they should focus on fixing the roads of the island, which are usually awfully full of bumps...

2 towns would be destroyed if they made the bridge. Also, Sicilia and Calabria's streets sucks so much that building a bridge between two so poor infrastactures makes no sense

So the video starts by saying that a bridge was never built due to seismic activity and being economically unviable. Then immediately says that the Italian government will invest €12b to create a bridge.

Is it just me or is there a massive narrative gap missing here?

The same reason why Hainan province is not connected to Guangdong province by a bridge through Qongzhou Strait!

Oh some Italians will be pissed where you drew the line between north and south

*Northern Italy stating it's not worth it to invest into Southern Italy tells you all you need to know.*
