Sicily is on the African plate, while mainland Italy is on the Eurasian plate. The two plates are moving toward one another, which means Sicily is about to collide with Italy. Any bridge built between them would get compressed by a few inches every year. And that would mean constant public funds going toward keeping up repairs on the bridge.
