Ma Rainey may not have been beautiful, but she could well have been attractive. It is actually possible to be physically ugly, but so charismatic that one becomes attractive to others. We would have to see an actual performance to judge.

She had African features and she was dark skinned, and fat which is far away from the Eurocentric ideal of beauty, That doesn’t necessarily make her ugly but according to the rules of the western world perhaps

She wasn't ugly at all. She was full figured, dark skinned, and had gold teeth--all opposite traits of the typical white Eurocentric woman. The opposite of white being considered as "not attractive" is pure ignorance.

I saw a photo of her as a younger woman. There was a photo of Pa Rainey too. Ma was slinder back then, and she had a charming cuteness to her face in my opinion. She wasn't hideous. She probably won Pa over with her big personality, and he may have found her attractive actually.
