the immaturity of saying “give it back i had it first” so masterfully communicates the innocence he stole from her. she’s a genius.

It’s so sad how many women relate to this lyric on a soul deep level. I bawled the first time I heard it.

Sometimes the men get it, but women ALWAYS do

people need to stop assuming she means her virginity. this lyric hits so hard bcs it has according to me no hidden meaning it directly slaps u on the face. girlhood is this sense of innocence not knowing what the world will do to u for just existing. i am having a hard time putting it in words but i am sure most women understand. i feel so bad for taylor and many women who probably relate to the line

I feel like her voice almost sounds like her younger self when she sings the line in this song, and that’s why it hits me. I cry every damn time.

the numbing heart-wrenching of collective understanding in that line — how many of us there are, grieving our girlhoods. it splits me in half

Girlhood does NOT mean virginity. It’s a certain innocence and a sense of self. I think this line slams so many women, because we are SEXUALIZED and SCRUTINIZED from the damn time we are twelve by older gross men, by the culture at large, and our sense of self and confidence absolutely crumbles often once we reach middle school. Even the most well adjusted socially supported women went through this phase (which can be 100 times worse with social media). A book came out 20 + years ago called “Reviving Ophelia” about this loss of autonomy and sense of self. So while Taylor’s loss was at 19 with a manipulative much older man, I think the line resonates with everyone who had adulthood foisted on them, aka not on their terms. I am an older woman, and so I’ve had time to process and come to terms with my own sorrows around that feeling, but I have to be honest- that line and its delivery gave me pause and hit my gut like someone threw an orange at me. In other words- I get it.

There are two types of women reacting to this: those who VISIBLY SHOW their pain and those who TRY TO HIDE their pain. It's a line women understand to our VERY core. And for those who had their girlhood forcibly taken, it runs deeper than that...

you can't tell who's been through it and who's honestly just excited because the line is THAT good

It is one thing to seek revenge on another person and it hits even deeper when one says, "I regret you all the time." I literally wept when I first listened to this song and I still get teary-eyed every time I hear it playing. I feel Taylor's immense pain in every lyric. Taylor, I'm here for you.

it’s such a painful line bc women remember the moment their girlhood was stolen from them and they were forced to grow up too fast. it’s a gut wrenching feeling hearing that line that men will never fully understand

I'm a male and got sexually abused when I was a child; just hearing these lyrics also hurt me a lot. This makes me emotional every time I listen to it. It unlocks that freaking memory.

Who else cried literally the entire video simply bc you had to listen to that line over and over again?

This line solidified it as not just one of her best songs ever but her most…disturbing song. It’s…just terrifying. It’s horrifying. The fact she was groomed and abused by that fuck and he still claimed innocence or tried to burden it on her is so fucked. She was still a child. It doesn’t matter if she was 19 or not, she was in the industry for years before that and didn’t get to really enjoy the wonders of her “girlhood and innocence” or some shred of herself that he took from her she won’t ever get back. It’s just crazy man

I think the great thing about this line is it's so specific but so broad in meaning. For me it's about having to grow up too fast to take care of my siblings when I should've been a kid. For others it could be a heartbreak, for still more it could be virginity. THAT'S why it hits so hard. There's something in everyone's life that gives the feeling of a lost childhood. And it's painful, no matter what form that comes in

I understand why this line hits harder than others but I still think it’s wrong to assume that she’s necessarily talking about losing her virginity to John. I feel like in this context, girlhood means so much more…

its not just the words in this line but her delivery as well, the way she's almost SCREAMING it, like this whole song her anger and resentment has been reaching the boiling point and this is the line where it overflows, where she DEMANDS her girlhood back because now that she's older she knows enough to be furious on her past self's behalf, and she doesnt want revenge or anything she wants back what she lost, what was stolen from her, because it wasnt fair

You why this line hurts so much? She sang it in a desperate pleading way, like she's just begging him to give it back to her coz she can't anymore. But deep inside she knows she can't have it anymore and having it back will still not take away her pain.
