I was driving home after talking to a guy I met in the spring of 2011 when we were both about to turn 20. We'd hung out a good bit that summer, and I remember one afternoon, after talking to him all day, I was driving the 50 mile ride home and realized I loved him (and that he was the first person I'd ever truly loved). This song had just come on the radio because the album was debuting, and it played with the windows rolled down and the smell of grass and honeysuckle coming through as these new emotions swirled in my chest. 7 years later those opening notes still hit me like a sack of bricks and it takes me right back to my Volvo station wagon, the smell of summer, and how good it felt to have his arms around me. We never started dating, but remained friends until we fell apart from each other for a while due to life. I got engaged, broke up. He dated girls, broke up with them. Last spring we reconnected like no time had passed. We're getting married next year and I'll be walking down the aisle to this. It's the highlight on the soundtrack of my life. Thank you, Justin.
Edit: Wow, thank you all for your kind words! It's July 2021 and we're still going strong. He's the best thing that's ever happened to me. Keep your head up if you haven't found your one yet, they're out there 😁

This song will always be one of "those songs" that give me the lump in the throat, and the watery eyes, and the weight on the chest. I'll never stop listening.

I was playing this song when I got into my first car wreck. I got hit… and this song was still on and playing… in that moment when it all happened and it was still playing after… I just felt like it was all going to be okay… thank you Justin.

The moment the camera caught that guy in the audience crying and he looked up, saw he was being recorded and laughed - then you see Justin saw it and was smiling too

Idk, it was a perfect second of connection that felt (to me) like what this song is about - all the insignificant moments that are both tiny and monumental at the same time

I still remember when this album won him the best new artist Grammy, beating out Nikki Minaj and skrillex. I laughed so hard at the other nominees reactions when he they announced it. Great album, great artist

My brother showed me this song in 2011 and he said that it reminded him of our late Father. I instantly fell in love with it (even though I didn’t understand the meaning of the lyrics) and it always would make me think of my brother for showing me this song. In March, my brother passed and when I play this song it brings me to tears every time. To my big brother, you will always be a part of me, and unfortunately apart from me..

As pretentious as it sounds, seeing bon iver live was a spiritual experience for me. I'll never ever forget it

I wanted to share a story with all you. I’m Chilean, and the first time I came upon bon iver was in 2012, with this song actually. I remember browsing through the music channels on my tv and Holocene came along. I fell in love instantly with the music. Ever since, his music has been by my side through very hard times. It’s almost impossible to describe in words the power of his music.
Anyways, I was lucky enough to travel this year to Minnesota to visit family. My uncles offered us tickets to any concert we (me and my little brother) wanted to go while we were here. We saw that Bon Iver was playing during the time we were going to be there. But the tickets were sold out. We went anyways to watch from the street. But my brother (who’s a real cheecky bastard) figured a way of getting us tickets with people who were leaving the concert. We entered through the side and walked up to almost the first row. It was truly sublime. I couldn’t believe what was happening. When Bon Iver took out the acoustic guitar and started playing the beautiful arpeggio intro of Holocene I bursted into tears. I cried the whole song. It was a dream come true. I just want to thank you Justin for your music. I’ll never forget that day.

Glad to see this song made the cut of the 'old' songs he is still playing live. Wouldn't be able to stand the idea this would never be played live again... it's too big for me.
