Mark Knopfler - Janine (One Deep River)

It’s the same old rodeo
Whenever it appears
The roughnecks and truck drivers
Pipeliners and engineers
Our dusty little cowtown
Turned into a boomtown fast
Guess we had to say so long
To our little town of the past

Janine my heart goes out to you
I know you’ve been trying
I’ve been trying too

Now there’s big rigs on the highway
Loaded up with sand and tools
Oil rigs on the skyline
New kids in the schools
The thing about a cowtown
There’s always dust
But it always rains eventually
And rain it must

Janine my heart goes out to you
I know you’ve been trying
I’ve been trying too
Janine my heart goes out to you
I know you’ve been trying
I’ve been trying too

I hope that you’ve been saving
A little of that boomtown pay
I hope that you’ve been holding on
To something for a rainy day
The thing about a cowtown
There’s always dust
The thing about a boom is
There’s always a bust

Janine my heart goes out to you
I know you’ve been trying
I’ve been trying too
Janine my heart goes out to you
I know you’ve been trying
I’ve been trying too

My favourite song of the album. Mark’s voice has mellowed and softened over the decades, and you can hear the poignancy in every word and line. And the musicians accompanying him are world class, obviously. Just wonderful, all of it. Thank you

Mark is one the few artists who gets better as time goes on. One Deep River is as solid as it gets!

All those years ago when Dire Straits first hit the scene I wonder if Mark ever dreamed that one day he would become a national treasure, because he is. A mellow, thoughtful, gentle character, with sublime skill and expression in his guitar playing, and beautiful observation of life laid out in so many wonderful songs. I’m so grateful to have been able to enjoy listening to him in my lifetime 🙏

sometimes I try to make a compliment, but anything I say seems small for the size of his talent. ❤

I don’t know how many established musicians still produce quality new songs at this age. Mark has to be one of the few that still do. What a treat for the fans.

This song takes the admiration for MK even further than what thousands of fans have held for him throughout his 40+ year music career. You are very, very great Mark!

such an incredible song... so simple and beautiful...and the solo...timing, to chords..words..story....Mark has only continued to grow as a musician..hard to believe that is possible...when he slides into A over the F chord near the beginning of the solo...only Beethoven could challenge the gods like favorite song on an incredible album..please Mark...don't stop....

At 77 seems like I've been listening to this guy forever! I have and for good reason. The master!

Nothing like honest storytelling...

One thing about Mark's writing is the diverse 'styles' he employes. An album might have any number of tracks on it, but each track has its own 'feel' to it, be it a noisy shipyard or a dry dusty road. Thank you Mark for keeping the music alive!

Hello Mark Knopfler, I particularly like your music because of these harmonious ballads. There is no calmer singing voice in the world. I've been listening to them for almost 50 years. This Gibson sound through your playing style with these wonderful melodies and chords have always accompanied my musical life. Thank you very much for that. Ralph

I love this track. I love all of Mark's tracks! The sound of his guitar just makes me smile. The steel guitar also sounds beautiful.
