I love that Dr. Mike is talking about this. I think this is really important to start talking about.

My mom fell from a horse 10 years ago. A helicopter came and took her to the hospital and she stayed there for one week in a private room. All kind of tests were made. Finally she was fine, nothing serious, she just had to wear a neck collar thing for 2 months. The cost for all was like 90 dollars. I live in Spain.

Insurance companies truly are the biggest leeches to ever exist.

My elder uncle had acute pneumonia and organ failure, was in the ICU for a month. With nurses and doctors monitoring him 24/7. He eventually passed on though we knew the doctors tried their best.

The bill in the end came to roughly 40USD without any insurance. The staffs apologised to us with much sympathy during the send off. I live in Malaysia.

Price transparency would be a huge step in fixing our broken system. It exist in every other industry.

I'm trying to imagine what it must feel like being a doctor having to answer that question to a patient whose well being and quality of life depends on, and to have to tell them Its dependant on a series of factors that are outside of your control that are solely implemented to make money off of for the middle men.
It must be heart breaking for the doctor (of course the patient as well) especially when you know so many doctors do this because they want to help people.
Another thing to add to my gratitude list.

The other main problem with health insurance that is rarely talked about is, typically, YOU aren't their customer. Your HR department is. The insurance company doesn't care if you hate them because they don't need to YOU to renew your policy, they need your HR representative to renew. Most people are going to take their company's insurance policy, regardless of how crappy it is, because it likely beats paying for it out of pocket.

I’m glad more and more doctors are speaking out on this issue because it needs to be addressed. I remember having an acl surgery and when I saw how much the insurance paid my jaw hit the floor.

The cost of my eye exam was $110 with insurance. When I told them I did not have insurance, the price dropped to $89. The reason some surgeries are so expensive is because hospitals massively raise the prices for everything when they know insurance companies will pay.

As a person who works in the Healthcare Industry, I can confirm...no lies have been told here.

I went to several clinics/hospitals asking for a price for an x-ray, and nobody could tell me. Then I found a pretty big, doctor owned clinic that did it for 45$, and the doctor probably spent 30 minutes talking to me about the other injury possibilities. It was the best doctor experience I've ever had.

The fact that insurance companies can have major sport stadiums named after them yet refuse to help pay for my medical care shows me how screwed up it all is

My wife's aunt lives in India. She was recently diagnosed with Cancer. She got an operation, 6 chemotherapy and 33 radiation all for free under a government program. The total cost was not more than $7k . Some of these procedures are damn cheap even if you put doctors salaries and operations costs

Same with pharmacies. So often patients will drop a prescription off and ask for a price. We just don't know until it's typed up and billed.

I used to work for an health insurance company and he’s not lying. They literally have to put whatever code is close to what you actually need because they will deny. And then it’s “illegal” for the insurance company to tell the hospital/doctors office what the billing code is or how the billing should be done. Especially in Managed Long Term Care. It’s a money hungry business for real

i work in the medical billing industry(work for usa from india)and its soo truee. It was such a bizarre concept for me to grasp. It so instresting how it works. Sometimes one doctor gets paid more for the same diagnosis while the other one gets paid less for the same diagnosis and when i asked why they said its just in the contract

The healthcare system isn't the problem in America, it's the government and insurance companies.
