Pruning Clematis can seem overwhelming! The most common cause of clematis NOT flowering is a pruning mistake.

In summary:

Group 1 - Early flowering NO winter prune, they can have a hair cut and a bit of a tidy AFTER flowering.

Group 2 - Bit of a haircut now, trim around the edges to neaten up and tie in to a nice shape and secure it to any structures.

Group 3 - Hard prune now. This will flower on this years new growth.

I hope this was helpful.

Thank you! I have an etoile violette that was AMAZING last year (I did add Miracle Gro!) It's mid-March and looking very dried out and messy. I am going to be brave and cut it down as for Group 3.

So do we always prune in spring? Same for all groups?

I have a Rebecca Clematis that I cut back last year and have no idea what group she is or if I’ve killed it 🙁
