CLEMATIS VARIETY & PRUNING GUIDE – How to prune and great varieties to grow

Welcome to Adam’s Gardening Guides.
Clematis are one of the most popular garden flowers to grow, and rightly so.
Choose carefully and you can find Clematis that flower in every season, but Spring and Summer flowering clematis are probably favourites.
However, buying and planting Clematis is only the start … then you need to learn how to prune them.
In this video I show you step-by-step how I prune the clematis I grow in my garden, and I hope this will give you the confidence to prune yours too.

I am so happy to see how you are growing Arabella Clematis. I also have this plant. I grow it on my screened in porch, in a very large pot climbing on an obelisk .We live in Delaware, zone 7B and it has performed beautifully. I have two other clematis, Roguch and Asao. I wish I had room for more!

Thank you for a really informative video. Great close ups so we can see what you are doing. I didn’t realise some clematis aren’t climbers and some great examples of different types. I’ve learned so much. Can you recommend any fragrant clematis?

I forgot what type my clematis is. What I remeber is that cardboard shown Purple flowers when it was bought. First year it did not do anything, this year it had leaves and started to climb the trellis, maybe next spring it flowers. So I think I will not prune it at all, I need to see when it flowers to see what type of clematis it is
