The waters off Florida's southern tip were so hot Tuesday that you could mistake a dip in the Atlantic for a hot tub. All of these high temperatures -- on the sea and on land -- have concerned scientists about the future of the planet. Allegra Legrande, climate scientist at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, joined CBS News to explain what's happening to the Earth -- and what needs to be done before it's too late.

She did so well until the very end, where she lies to herself about not crossing tipping points yet and that there’s still time.

This in a year that reached highest ever average temperature in human history at the fastest ever ACCELERATING rate after 30 years of being told how to avoid this . Being told is clearly not enough . All easy options have been squandered shamelessly .

My understanding is that we’re already guaranteed a ghastly future and that cannot be undone. However, it is never too late, because we can always make it less terrible. Any emissions reduction will always prevent an even more dire and destructive future. Which is why it is insane that luxury and discretionary emissions are not being restricted. Reaching zero emissions will be necessary, but difficult. Just reducing energy production and consumption is easy.
