How to FIx a Sinking Office Chair | Easy Simple Fast Free Cheap | Modify Faulty Gas Cylinder Lift

In this video, I show you how to fix an office chair that sinks down when you sit in it. This is the result of the cylinder failing and not holding pressure. (The cylinder is is gas / pneumatic, not hydraulic.) The chair can be securely set at a fixed height by modifying the cylinder. This fix is safe, fast, easy, and inexpensive or free. It does not alter the appearance of the chair in any way; it looks exactly the same. Let’s repair a sinking office chair!

I did the extra work to provide understanding and multiple options (I apologize if I made it look complicated or confusing).
All you need is a one dollar pipe nipple of the correct length from the hardware store, and a flat head screwdriver. It literally takes about five minutes to install and complete.

My wifes chair has been collapsing for at least seven or more years now. I had a 1/2" nipple a little too short. So I added a coupler screwed tight and cut to proper length. Fixed in about 30 minutes. This is about one of the easiest solutions to a problem I have seen on YouTube yet. Just never though of a so simple fix. Thank a Lot

OMG! You BLOODY LIFESAVER!! lol. My good chair (about 5-6 years old) blew out a 2nd time about 9-10 months ago (I actually bought a new gas cylinder the first time) and fortunately my building manager gave me a 2nd hand chair for nothing, so I just threw out the old one. Anyway, 6 months later and the cheap version he gave me developed a faulty cylinder (i'm cursed lol). It's xmas coming up and I didn't want to shell out on a new chair, and this chair is too cheap to bother with a new cylinder, so I've just been putting up with it.

Today it slipped down about 10 times in an hour (more than usual) so I thought I'd YouTube search a DYI fix. And BAM!! Saw your vid! I fortunately had some left over 2.5cm pipe from a project a while back, used my Bunnings Pipe cutter to cut to the correct length (following your awesome instructions) and WHAMMO! Problem solved! Like you I NEVER use the up/down gas lift anyway (unless it's fixing it when it sinks down) so this is perfect!

I like how you said this isn't a cylinder replacement video but it actually gave me the knowledge to change out a brat of a cylinder that wouldn't just pop out of the base with a few rubber mallet strikes. Thank you!

I bought a high end chair from a second hand store for $15 but the problem was as indicated in this video, it didn't go up or down. I solved the problem using the exact process outlined here. Amazing, and thank you.

Just fixed mine thanks to your video. Used a 3/8 inch by 3 1/2 inch pipe nipple inside a 3/4 inch by 3 1/2 inch pipe nipple as my spacer, took less tha 5 minutes. I am now a subscriber Thanks much for the guide!

You are my hero, I have this same chair and am in the same situation, I managed to use some 3/4 pvc pipe cut to length and filed down the plastic washer to fit inside the pipe like you showed and the chair is so firm and sturdy again, I have been dealing with this chair sinking for months now and finally have sweet sweet relief, thank you very much
