I once flew from San Francisco to the Virgin Islands and my flights were overbooked three times. I got three round trip tickets out of one leg of the trip! It was well worth it. My trip was for ten days and I wasn’t in a hurry to get there.

They bribed them. I was on a similar flight to Las Vegas. I could hear the attendant talking about needing to get a flight crew out there. Since i was in the front row; i said what are you offering? They said, $2000 in travel vouchers, $1000 in cash and new tickets on a later flight. Me and my friend said Sold before they made an announcement. So instead of needing 7 volunteers, she asked for 5. We arrived in vegas 1 hour later of our earlier flight.

I’ve taken an offer like that coming home from Miami after a cruise. Got a $2500 flight voucher plus the airline paid for our hotel room and meals since we had to stay overnight until the next flight. Was fun!!

I used to travel for work all the time between the late 90’s and 2015. I booked my travel so that if offers like these did come available, and they did often, I could take advantage of them and still get to my job site on time. Lots of vacations were had on those vouchers.

Pilot here, cargo can be left behind in almost every case. Passengers cannot, also if you’re sitting on an airplane you’re not at fault. Means in this case no overbooking was made, especially since everyone was already seated. The only reason for this aircraft to ask passengers to stay behind, is because the fuel truck has most likely exceeded the Block fuel. And judging by that amount of passengers needed to deboard, roughly by 1.4-2 tons depending on the underload they had to work with(likely much more since you usually you'd have some room to play around with).
It’s a rare case and happens when a Fueler is not in direct contact with the Cockpit/TRC or the route was changed due to bad weather conditions and no one informed the fuel truck, mistakes happen but in this case it’s not the airlines fault.

Edit: for those people still saying it’s overbooking, if that were the case it’d mean, that the gate agents would let more people onboard than there are seats. This would never happen especially since passengers who have been overbooked can only be found at the gate and never in the aircraft due to the gate system not allowing more passengers to the aircraft than it’s allowed capacity. Simply put, you cannot offload overbooked passengers that are not on board of the aircraft.

I was a student in Miami and was flying back home to India for the Christmas holidays.
When I got to the airport, they said they were overbooked and offered me $1500 and night’s stay at a 5 star Hilton if I agreed to fly at the same time the next day. I had a 3 week break and was in no hurry to get home. Best decision of my life 😂
