Microsoft Surface Laptop Go Review | Best Ultraportable Student Laptop?

Reviewing Microsoft's Surface Laptop Go, a more compact ultraportable Windows laptop that's well suited to students and everyday users on a budget. It's a lot more affordable than the regular Surface Laptop, but is this Go version among the best notebooks for portability in 2021?

I've been testing Microsoft's new thin and light laptop for the past week, using it as my full-time machine. And for everyday use, including web browsing, media streaming and other simple tasks, it's great. The keyboard is brilliant, comfortable to use and ideal for touch typing - although the lack of backlighting is an issue.

Likewise, the Surface Laptop Go's compact screen produces respectable contrast and accurate colours. Audio is respectable too, with built-in Dolby speakers. Of course, as this is one of the most dinky laptops around, Microsoft hasn't found much room for ports. And performance is also limited, so forget about proper gaming, video editing or anything taxing.

Still, for students on a budget and everyday users, the Microsoft Surface Laptop Go is one of the best options right now if you prioritise portability.

I am actually watching on this... And i would totally recommend it, it is light, portable, and i have adhd so i am very particular with noises and texture and the keys are perfect and so are the trackpad. i have tried the butterfly keys on the new mac but i couldn't handle it, the touchscreen is amazing and let me emphasise how smooth the trackpad is, wonderful speaker and good quality camera, the battery life is ok, but the fast charger works quite well. DEFINATLY GET IT!!!!

This is a little late but update! I’ve had this laptop for a few months for school and I LOVE IT! It’s lightweight it fits perfectly into a laptop compartment in backpacks! It even fits into bags. I can use it all day for school (about 6 hours) and still have about an hour or two of study time on it before it’s finally drained. It hasn’t started overheating at all. I’ve downloaded plenty of things and am on it daily and it still performs the same. Buy this for school😁😁😁

This is the first laptop review I've seen that touches upon how fast a laptop handles unlocking/locking multiple times in a short period of time (Very important quality of life feature imo). Excellent =)

just got 8GB/128GB for 549US. So far, love it. It is faster than my macbook 12 but a little bit heavier. Resolution is not high, can notice pixel if looks closely but it's ok for an appropriate viewing distance. Keyboard is lot better than macbook butterfly. Just disappoint that keyboard is not backlit. Battery life is so so.

Amazing device. Ive had the i5, 8gb model for over a year now. Very lightweight, fast, and enjoyable viewing experience. Touch screen is surprisingly a nice plus too.

Only reason this is being replaced is because I need a laptop that can run Matlab and Multisim. Otherwise, this laptop will be dearly missed. Recommend it!

I absolutely love, love everything about this laptop. but the only thing I dislike about it is the resolution, they really should improve it!

I just bought one yesterday and this is my verdict. 1- After awhile gets really hot. f you are holding it on your hand, better dont. The fun gets really noisy to the point you assume it is going to blow up. 2- The screen resolution is just bad. If you are used to to a crispy screen, this little laptop brings disappointment. 3- I live in New Zealand. I did change many times the keyboard configuration because for some reason it remains changing the keys order. A real nightmare to the point to think that might be better to download the keyboard configuration again. Cant trust to put robust software . You feel this laptop more as toy for kids only for watching videos. The button of fingerprint identification gets really hot....too hot. The battery life is pretty disappointing. The computer gets too hot to the point you assume the battery will get flat too quick. Not good at all for the money.

Okay guys, I am here to let you all know, there is a major design flaw. I just bought the laptop on Dec 31st, received it Jan 4th, and it is perfect. In all areas to be exact. There is one thing though, and that is the trackpad literally clicking when your wrists rest on the base of the computer while you type. Your wrist will click the trackpad. This is not a me issue, because I went to Best Buy to get it looked at. The guy went over to the other surface laptop go and clicked on the computer base, it also clicked the trackpad. That will indeed be an enormous issue if you plan on working on documents. I am leaving this here because reviewers not noticing this. Might want to look into another model. All that aside, it is very clean and works lovely. No other issues, but that one issue is a very huge nussiance.

The product would be good, if they bumped off the bottom eMMC/4GB model and moved the middle and high end SKUs down one notch. The 8GB/256GB model has no business costing nearly the same as the M1 Macbook Air with the same.

That 3x2 aspect ratio is great for productivity, but no reviewers talk about the ease or difficulty of reading alphanumeric characters on that screen. Even though that might be subjective, that's a serious omission.
