#logcabin #bushcraft #offgrid #survival
One man leaves the city life behind to build a cheap off grid log cabin and homestead in the Canadian wilderness, including a log home, an outdoor kitchen, an outhouse, a woodshed and a sauna bathhouse. Building mostly with hand tools, Shawn James harvests building materials from the forests north of Toronto, Canada and crafts them into functional tools and shelters using traditional woodworking tools and methods. He practices bushcraft and survival skills every day, including fire starting, tree identification and harvesting, wild edible foraging, fishing, hunting, camping in the summer and winter, travelling by canoe and snowshoe, navigation and water collection and purification.
Continue watching in 2019 as Shawn finishes the sauna, plants a forest garden for fruit and vegetables, builds an underground root cellar, ice house and cheese cave, a timber frame workshop and a remote hunt camp closer to fish and game.

Hi everybody. This video is essentially a movie of my life over the last two years from the first day of spring two years ago to the first day of spring yesterday. This is a video I've wanted to make since I started building the homestead - my evolution from a sheet metal worker turned corporate executive then to whatever it is I am today. It was fun and interesting to edit this video, especially since it's a lot of content and a lot of changes condensed into a relatively short hour and a half. This is my journal. If you enjoyed this, my weekly videos include over one hundred more hours of cabin life and wilderness living so please subscribe so you don't miss anything. This year will be more interesting as I continue learning to live closer to the land. There are ALOT of questions and assumptions from new viewers about how I film/edit/upload, if I replant trees, who the 2nd dog belonged to, etc. You will find all the answers in my previous videos. I have uploaded a video every week detailing the entire process over the past two years. Thank you to all of you who have been following my journey from the start and welcome those of you who are new here.

At approx 1:11:50 when the soft song starts to play I realized what this entire video is a analogy of, LIFE
I’m laying in bed approx 4 years after I lost my 16 year old boy to a fast 5 weeks of cancer. Tired with a loss of why I’m here now I try to keep my mind busy so I won’t weep any more. A heart can only break so hard. I’m 55 and had a heck of a life but I’m tired now and don’t really want to keep going. My boy was the best boy a father could ever hope for and I cannot believe he is gone and with him went my heart
Life is a riddle, a strange thing to experience once you get really deep into it
This man did what so many dream and want to do
My son and I built a shack in the woods together. Nothing compared to this guy but we experienced much of the same thing. Hard work, perseverance, patience, pacing oneself, hope, vision and best of all peace of being there. For me having my boy there made it as close to heaven as this old earth could ever be. Love is what makes it Yet with love comes pain

Hat off too you sir and appreciate you sharing your experience. The timely addition of the music painted a great picture sadly so many today have never and will never taste. Brought back good memories
Life is a strange thing

As an old disabled man that's mostly confined to my bed due to horrible pain, I want to say that your videos have given me much joy and pleasure!
The amount of time and effort you put into them and everything you do totally amazes me.
I've been watching them for a while now, and have seen almost all of them.
Just wanted to tell you how appreciative I am for what you have shared with the world.
My computer is my window to other's lives, lives that I will never be able to live myself, but it sure is nice to see what you have accomplished in such a short time.
Happy Holidays to you and your family.
peace

Thanks for the very minimal amount of music. Hearing nature is so mediating, the truest soundtrack there is.

I don't think there's a man alive that's seen this that hasn't at some point in the 90 minutes wished he was you. So many lost arts on display. Thank you.

So much better than reality TV. No angst, no drama, just hard work and perseverance. This is what Television wishes it was.

Good day. I live in the Russian region of Yakutia. I do not speak English, used Yandex translator. Started watching your channel from the time you started building a kitchen on the street and since then look forward to your new movies. Although I, too, can do something with my own hands, I admire Your skills and performance. I assure You that your videos help us to understand that our desires are quite similar, regardless of our place of residence. I believe that a real man should be able to build a house, and game to produce, and to cook a delicious meal. I also like Your dog very much. Good luck, health and financial well-being. With deep respect to You and your work Tereshchenko Boris.

This is not a video. This is an epic movie. The amount of work is amazing here. This should be on No.1 YouTube trending.

After a stressful day I play this video and it helps me fall asleep. Not because it’s boring or uninteresting, it’s because it’s peaceful and beautiful. I know you didn’t make the video intended as a sleeping aid but it works great for me. Beautiful scenery, self reliance, good craftsmanship all combined to relax me enough to forget my troubles. Thanks
