I have used those on road trips in the US they are sold there under several names MFJ etc for $12 to $15 . I get them with a SMA connector
and have had good results . The antenna stuck to the roof fine at speeds up to 85 (naughty me).

I've had my eye on an Antenna like this for a while. As I live in the middle of the block of flats I cant put up an Antenna anywhere so this is my next best option.

I have the same antenna and for the size it works very well, I changed the little mag and with the right thread made a adapter from 3/8s onto the little thread's on the antenna and is on a large mag with better coax then give it to the family and made another with a 5inch mag it does PMR and 70cms and very happy making antennas got the measurements of transmission 1

Much better than a rubber ducky and you don't get breakups when you move about even a bit. Of course better and higher goes further. For serious mountain topping, as much beam and masting as you can manage will do wonders even with 5 or 10 watts.

I had one of those years ago, not the longest lasting but okay for the price. A mount with a shorter length of less lossy coax would be better still, even again with a short antenna.

Nice little set up. Many years ago, I was on 70cm and had a great lift and had a queue of Germans on all night. 200 ft above sea level with a rotatable 48 Yagi on a 70ft tower 4 watts. I lost my voice in the end. G0DCZ

Hi, I use the diamond version of this antenna, as my Jeep has a fibreglass roof the antenna is mounted on the wing. It gives good range on APRS, so I can confirm the distances you were getting.

My favorite 2 meter mobile antenna is the Newtronics Hustler CGT-144 phased 5/8 over 1/4 wave. It has a very low angle of radiation. I accessed the long range Denver Colorado repeater from 380 Km and the medium range Little Rock Arkansas repeater from 120 Km.

I have had a couple of them, but my vehicle destroyed the SWR on them. The other OP mentioned Welshpool. I spent a week there about 50 years ago. Lovely place.

The antenna should come with an SMA connector and not with a PL-259 plug. The plug probably weighs as much as the antenna, mag mount and feed line together.

I’ve setup my cars aux jack in a way that lets me connect my walkie talkie to car’s antenna. No extra clutter and the antenna is easy to replace at anytime.

In 1988, I made a very long contact with a RadioShack® 3 watt, 3 channel, walkie talkie. The contact was from Prince Edward Island to Central Indiana. It was very exciting! He came in crystal clear. The aurora borealis. In 2013, I made a vhf contact from Toronto to New New Jersey. It was with a MURS channel 3 walkie talkie. I liked the woman's accent. She was calling for her kiddos.

Hi Lewis, I just received the same antenna and a Anytone AT-779 uv from moonraker today, I'm fitting them in the car asap (£7.50 for antenna when bought with the radio) I'm not sure the Antenna will stick as the base has a felt material instead of rubber, will give it a try tomorrow and report back.

Invested in one of these and so far I am still unsure.
Gives better quality when the car is running but when stationary it seems unable to pick up some repeaters that I can pick up with the rubber ducky from inside the car.
