Why The Mac Charger Comes Apart

If you’ve ever tried pulling a Mac’s charger out of the wall, you may’ve had a small piece of it detach. Apple actually designed it this way on purpose. Similar to these two plastic hooks that easily flip open. But why is the Mac charger designed by Apple this way? Well that what I’ll explain in this video.

I love this channel because it’s short and to the point: no long intro/outro, no sponsored content, no asking us to like and subscribe. Thanks and can’t wait for the next one!

When I was in high school, everyone had school issued MacBooks, and I used to charge people like $15 to sloppily solder their busted cable back together and wrap it up with electric tape

I don’t miss replacing the $80 charger. Thought I would miss MagSafe, but I am very happy with USB Type C.

As a person who travelled a lot between 2010-2019, Having my MacBook Pro 13" 2015 work in every country by just changing the bit? Priceless

One of apple’s best product. Imagine if all products were just as modular. 😭 no competing society, just infinite options! 😌

Customers :
- My cable broke again after 2 months of use. Could you make them more durable ?

Apple :
- Lol you can unplug it now so when it breaks you just buy a new cable

Another reason might be cost cutting. By making a universal charger that can be used all over the world, Apple doesn't have to make different regional variants of the charger, instead just bundle in the approrpriate plug which is a much cheaper part to make variants of.
That could be the most important reason, with the others being a bonus. Many other manufacturers do the same with regional adapters, or use standardised cables and plugs.

I have to say, I was never confused by the removable plug. It always seemed logical and kind of clever to me.

Who took a bite out of the apple logo? Well, that is what I'm going to explain right now.

Removing the plug on the charging brick exposes a port that is actually compatible with not just Apple's swappable plugs, but also several other cables that have that same plug on their ends, which can actually be fairly common. I have a cable that I use for my rechargeable AA and AAA batteries, and it fits that port just fine.

I just love those hooks. It’s was so useful.
To avoid cable issues I just left the cable make a long curl near the brick then I’d coil it around the hooks.

Straight to the point.
I panicked when it came apart, being new to the Mac. Thanks for creating this video :)

It is also a supply chain move focused on reducing production costs. They can mass produce the converter which saves cost, and producing the adapter, which is cheaper, is made separately. It saves a TON of money.
