To put in simple terms the empty books selves are in place of the numbered books, just choose the numbered book in place of where the golden statues are.

Edit: okay so I'm an idiot and if you're an idiot like me I just figured it out so I'll help you out as best I can the nine empty shelves on the bookcase act as a numeric keypad and the golden object in the empty slots will tell you which number you have to press the shapes give you the order of the numbers that you'll press
