for people that don't have tow rig or want to drive their cars from the port themselves, I recommend getting a temporary plate first. I went with Montana LLC route and they need the export certificate, english translation, customs documents (hs7 (DOT), EPA and etc), and a VIN inspection (which I'm pretty sure Vermont and South Dakota don't even need) for temp plates. With temp plates, you can move your car to your home and register it later!

Nice! Just got an Evo IV back at the end of 2020 from Osaka. Still waiting for Oct. untill legal. My exporter offered storage. Can't wait untill then, but coming up to my date soon. They actually helped with all the requirements. Deffinatly get a broker. Also, recomend getting a TWIC card. Not expensive and you can access the port with no escort.

Thanks for the video. It didn't answer all of my questions, but it would be amazing if it did. It added a lot to my knowledge of what to expect and hopefully informed me of a few of the landmines that I can now avoid. I HATE bureaucratic processes. I know everyone hates bureaucracies, but I *REALLY* hate them. I'm not looking forward to that aspect. I'm also not looking forward to the 16 hour round trip to the port in Newport News Virginia to pick up my little 4WD 1996 Hijet kei truck. It's in surprisingly good shape based on the pictures and inspection, considering I only paid $265 for the truck and $2115 to have it cleaned, shipped and warranted. Being a light truck, the import duty is 25% (the protectionist Chicken Tax), so I'm hoping I pay 25% of $265. :-)

Great video. I got historic plates for my GTR (Maryland’s new electronic inspection system won’t let any mechanic pass you if the parameters for you vehicle aren’t already in the system, and it’s only JDM cars). You might be fine if they put it in as an “Acura” Integra and added 0’s to the vin to match a USDM vin, but unfortunately for me, Nissan Skyline wasn’t an option so, I had to go historic.

I wanted vanity tags and had to go to Glen Burnie. The other MVA’s are useless. Great video though, I just purchased a JDM Landcruiser from Japan, it’s en route to Port of Baltimore…what Export Broker did you use?

My other three vehicles are insured with GEICO but they refused to insure my kei truck, so Hagerty was the best option for me. I prefer annual insurance so I'm not hassled with it as often, and GEICO will only do six months, presumably so they can increase the rates more often? I like the concept of insurance, but now that car insurance is mandated by government, the insurance cartel sucks. I'm looking to switch from GEICO. I'll see if Hagerty will quote my other vehicles.
