I had the SAME look on my face when I first saw the machine myself. Nice drum accompaniment BTW. I don't know if you have seen it by now, but he has a couple videos where he explains how the machine works. It is basically a glorified music box, or an even closer analogy...a drum based band (carousel) organ.

Wintergatan is a band that has their own channel featuring many hand made music instruments. One of their song actually takes place(or is at least heavily implied to be) in the Harry Potter universe.
