I feel like MM4 will use this video as an example of feature creep that should be avoided lol

I'm sure you pursue these concepts as a way to keep exploring and staying satisfied as an artist; in my opinion, this definitely feels like feature creep. The videos you did of hyper focusing on getting the core mechanisms to perform really well set the stage for a minimum viable marble machine (MVMM) that could be amazing; however, I feel like taking this approach of dreaming up new concepts really just makes people afraid you won't make a final version of the MM that just works, and does things well. Basic, core fundamentals first, MVMM after, THEN you explore new avenues for improvement and exploration. You already know all this more or less, I just really want to see you succeed and create the thing you've been working towards for so long.

Oh boy... This feels like the creepiest of scope creeps to have ever crept scopes. Although its very cool; adding even more complexity to a project that "failed" due to its complexity seems a little counter intuitive doesn't it?

Seeing that "Ep.1" in the title makes me excited!

Maybe you could use different drop heights, or impact angles, for different velocities. Seems easier to me than dealing with different sized marbles in the machine.

I respect you for being a dreamer and an artist, Martin! I just hope the engineering part of your brain thinks about all the different areas of feature creep real well before implementing new and complex solutions into the machine.

The charm isn't in sounding like a human, humans and DAW go beyond that already. The charm is sounding like a marble machine.

We are doomed, I love seeing Martin experimenting with new sounds but will it send him down a new rabbit hole of instruments that won’t play tight or consistently. Best wishes regardless, you do your best work is when you are passionate about the result.

Oof my belief in MM3 working dropped by quite a bit after this video was released 😬Playing with new ideas is really intoxicating and can provide motivation, but please be careful of feature creep. A basic drum machine with snare, bass and hi-hat is enough to do quite a bit, and you know that.
Also, are you assuming the MM3 will have to play all alone up on stage? You wouldn't want to collaborate with anyone while playing it? Things like an expressive drummer would be a really cool human element to collaborate with MM3. Or maybe a new addition to build on later. Please Martin, I want MM3 to happen 😭

"I failed to build the last machine because it was too complicated."
"I have a cool idea that makes the next machine more complicated!"

Am I the only one worried about how much more ambitious and complex this is going to be? It sounds awesome, sure, but won't this be one of the things that makes MM3 end up like its older sibling?

Martin: "I want the new MM3 playing notes as timing tight as possible so that the MM3 will sound less human played an more robotic."
Also Martin: "I want to add multiple snare sounds to make the new MM3 sound less robotic and more human like played."

Lots of comments saying that this is a feature creep... And I actually agree with them. Maybe designing/planning other "more important" stuff first?

Like the marble collector and lifter, the marble lanes itself, rhythm wheels, how easy will marble gates fixes be, and etc...

I would add this idea to an "amazing features" list and work on this list after the machine starts is actually viable

Is this a prime example of "feature creep"?

martin, there is a reason we use a system with many different versions and iterations in engineering. We build the basics and then we change things one at a time until we hit a final version. if something fails, you go back to a version that worked and try again. If you put all those features into your design at the start, without having the basics work first you will be overwhelmed by fault and fails and it will end like the mmx. Get a version functioning that does the bare minimum, but works 100%. If you then feel its lacking as an instrument, start making it more complex.

Possibilities kill creativity. The original marble machine song is a great testament to that

First off, smells like scope screep. Second, you could kill two birds with one stone. I know this might complicate the gate actuation, but what if instead of all the marble sizes, you change the shape of the drop portion of the gate so that, depending on the shape of the plug you use on your music wheel, you can drop the marble from different heights/different ways

I can't wait to hear the soundtrack of the final version of star citizen

Isn't part of the beauty of the marble machines that they don't try to sound like humans? This screams to me way to much complexity again
