Guitars of the Day! Busting the myth that all high gain tones sound the same. There's 100% more compression but all of it sounds identical? Definitely not.

Having a mainly metal channel, “all high gain sounds exactly the same” is a comment I get a LOT. What do you think? 🤔

guitar players develop an ear for what we like and when we set up an amp you end up setting amps for similar sounds because it’s your preference. Amps definitely sound different but guitar players are they only ones who notice. The audience doesn’t care if plug into a mid 2000’s Line 6 Spider as long as the band sounds good.

The amps sound different, yes. However, depending on how you mix, set the EQ etc. you can make them sound practically the same or at least that the differences are barely distinguishable.

That Boogie sizzle forever has a place in my heart!

Using different speakers, mics, mic positions and even mic combinations is how you really make the biggest difference in tone.

Different high gain amps run through the same speaker will sound similar to each other.

Yes! It's mostly in the speaker. But you can cover a huge spectrum with a couple of EQ pedals using the same amp and cab.

I think my favorite thing about the 6505+ is that you can achieve that same huge low end girth and high end sizzle from the Dual Rec by placing a Graphic EQ in the FX Loop of the 6505+ and adding the frequencies that are missing from the amp on it’s own.

In a way, this makes the 6505+ slightly better than the Dual Rectifier in that you have that available mid scoop available if you wish to use it, but because the Dual Rectifier has naturally boosted low end and a rich high end sizzle on it’s own you don’t really need an EQ to get that tone. It’s all really just subjective but it’s worth experimenting with gear and finding a sound that suits you and the way you play.

Most high gain amps sound the same to people when they're not A/B'd. Facts.

Glen fricker has done an amazing job of this. What matters the most in your signal chain is your speaker. The pick ups don't matter as much, tone wood doesn't matter, the guitar amp doesn't matter as much.

The 2 amps chosen do sound the same as you are likely using the same cabinet for both.

peavey sounds better mesa sounds like a tin can full of bees lmao

This is a perfect example of two amps I’d use together…they cover the frequency range nicely on their own, but having one panned hard left and one panned hard right would yield an even bigger and more ferocious sound.

It can all be *made* to sound the same. Looking at you Ola...

Ah, those classic Peavey and Boogie sounds. Brings me back to my Metal days~

The cab is all that matters tbh. You can make a peavey sound just like a mesa with the right cab and mic position. Mic type too.

I really do like both of them. Different enough to give you their own miracle.
I would like to hear them with my way, more retro-sound, Firebird and a Gretsch, delay... some fuzz and wah...
But I honestly think that you have catch up with the essence from a certain point of view and luckily and thankfully I'm familiar with these amps anyway, at least I have some experience. Great stuff really. 👌🏻👍🏻

Everyone seems to like the mesa more but I think I like the peavey a little more. It sounds closer to what I would hear in a studio mix while the mesa sounds more like the kind of tone I would make myself on my boss katana lol. I think I like the palm muted picking better on the mesa though. The ringing chords sound better with the peavey though.

Listening on an iPhone and I can tell that peavy is way more middy and the mesa way more scooped. So idk about that. I do know I’d hear even more differences if I had headphones or was playing through good speakers.

Great... Now I need to run both as a stereo rig. Best from both, making up for whatever the other lacks.

Depends on the eq, you can make amps sound similar with eq adjustments. Especially in a studio, you can make amps sound identical, may differ here and there when studying the frequency response. Spectre sound studio has great videos on this.
