Can Patriot Destroy Kinzhal Missile?

Can Patriot Destroy Kinzhal Missile?
The question regarding the Patriot air defense system's ability to neutralize the Kinzhal missile has sparked intense debate within defense circles. Russia projects the Kinzhal missile as an invincible hypersonic weapon, while the United States regards the Patriot as the premier air defense system. Both sides are engaged in a series of claims and counterclaims. In this video we'll be analyzing the capabilities of Patriot against the strengths of Kinzhal missile and will try to determine whether the Russian missile will be able to evade the Patriot, or the defense system will eliminate the Kinzhal.

Moscow claims that its Kinzhal hypersonic missile system, also known as ‘dagger’, is unstoppable. The design of the missile is derived from the Iskander missile, originally a ground-launched system. Several enhancements have been implemented in its guidance system to facilitate air launch capability. The missile is known for its ability to target both stationary and mobile objects, including aircraft carriers, missile defense systems, and land-based targets.

A standout feature of the Kinzhal is its remarkable speed, reaching up to Mach 10 or approximately 7600 mph. This speed advantage significantly diminishes the window of opportunity for countermeasures, delivering a significant tactical edge over slower and lighter cruise missiles.

The Kinzhal has a reported range of 1,200mi when launched from the MiG-31K aircraft, and a range of 1,900mi when launched from the Tu-22M aircraft. These range figures are calculated by adding the missile's range to the combat radius of the respective aircraft.

The missile is capable of striking with both conventional and nuclear warheads. This turns it into a strategic weapon of unprecedented deterrence. Its ability to carry devastating payloads at hypersonic speeds adds a new layer of complexity to global security dynamics. The production cost of a single Kinzhal missile is upward of $10 million.

On the other hand, The Patriot is a sophisticated surface-to-air guided missile system that can detect and shoot down incoming missiles and aircraft. A typical Patriot battery consists of a radar set, engagement control station, power generation, support stations, and 8 launch vehicles.

The Patriot is armed with two missile types, each with its own range and capability. The pac-2 variant can intercept and destroy aircraft and tactical ballistic cruise missiles through a proximity-fusing mechanism. Which means that the warhead is detonated near the incoming target, creating a blast wave that destroys it. The missile can exceed 3,146mph in speed and intercept targets at distances over 99 miles. While the pac-3 are optimized specifically to intercept and destroy incoming objects through a hit-to-kill technology, which involves physically colliding with the target to neutralize it. This makes pac-3 more effective against more advanced ballistic missiles, which may be equipped with decoys or other countermeasures. It has a range of 37mi and can engage incoming targets at high altitudes with speeds over 3,146mph. As per manufacturer, both missile types are used in tandem to achieve a success rate of 80 to 90%.

According to Strategic and International Studies, the cost of a single battery is about $1.1billion, which includes $400 million for the system and $700 million for the missiles.

Some comments.
The trajectory of the Iskander M/ Kinzhal is NOT fully ballistic.
Both can maneuver!
In addition, not only the speed of the interceptor missile is important, but also the radar device and the computers involved must be able to recognize AND track the trajectory of the incoming missile.
The performance of the Patriot missiles in Saudi Arabia against technically obsolete short-range ballistic missiles has been absolutely disastrous.
In addition, in connection with the damage to one system in Kyiv, it has also become known that all 32 rockets (8 launchers with 4 rockets each) were NOT successful in defending against the Kinzhal attacking the Patriot system itself!

My only question is this: What destroyed the Patriot battery at Kiev? The system was " damaged " because the radar was hit, and the other two units were not damaged( the command center/ truck, and the launch tubes) since they can be scattered, but without the radar, nothing else works.

Its better to show where the Patriot is, then thene the Kinzhal will released lets watch if that Patriot can take down Kinzhal, because the truth is Kinzhal already destroy Patriot, so how would they say that it can take down Kinzhal 🤔🤔🤔

In Ukraine, everyone has already seen how Patriot can fight against Kinzhal (dagger)... Patriot fired 32 missiles (the entire division - 8 launchers - fired) and could not shoot down one Kinzhal (dagger).
The result is that Patriot was destroyed near Kiev.

Patriot missile systeem is just a expensive piece of crap.

the mayor of kiev showed wrong missile claiming it was kinzhal. it was clear he was lying & the US didn't agree with that claim they keept their mouth shut.

I remember when patriot air defence got whacked 3 months ago in kiev, US said it was ''damaged'' but atleast i know it was 99% damaged

Nope, Patriot is nowhere near fast enough. Kinzal also has an unpredictable flight path which compounds the problem exponentially.

AN/MPQ-53 radar
Detection range at target EPR - 0.5 m² (missile) - 100 km.
Detection time is 8-10 s.
AN/MPQ-65 radar
Counter-missile MIM-104 (pak 3)
Striking range of ballistic targets - 15 - 20 km.
The range of destruction of aerodynamic targets - up to 60 km.
Speed - 5063 km/h.
Time between launches of missiles - 4 seconds (so that they do not destroy each other)

Kh-47M2 "Dagger"
Speed at an altitude of 20 km - up to 14, 688 km/h.
Flight path - quasi-balistic.
Decrease in altitude and cessation of maneuvering occurs just before hitting the target (in all videos it falls from above)

Dagger missile falling within the detection range of AN/MPQ-53 radar - 100 km, manages to pass 32 km in 8 seconds before the moment of detection, there are still 68 km that it will overcome in 16 seconds.
20 km distance of the pac 3 missile, flies for 14 seconds. While the launch interval of anti-missiles is 4 seconds. You can launch 4 anti-missiles in time.
The probability of hitting a tactical non-maneuvering target with one missile and without interference is 0.6-0.8, i.e. at least 3 missiles per target are needed for a guaranteed hit.
How many of them will be needed for the dagger is not clear, and there is no time.
P. S. AN/MPQ-53 radar can not work with targets faster than 7920 km/h at all
And the maximum speed of the pac 3 anti-missile is 5063 km/h.
So think for yourself whether patriot can hit the dagger or not.

Theoretically is impossible. Gotta say I love all who think it's possible. All they saw on the radar, was kinzhal' penetration aids.

Most funny thing, before the start of Ukraine and Russia war, US was saying a weapon like specifications of Kinzal doesn't exist, Russia is exaggerating the things;with current technology it's impossible to built such a weapon, most of the US media and military experts were claiming at that time.
However, when Russia destroyed patriotic batteries during war and NATO Command Center which was heavily guarded by patriotic defence system. Patriotic defence system and NATO command center turned into ashes.
US have some good weapon systems but they lack in hypersonics.

When you crunch the numbers, no chance. Just from detection (8 seconds) and consider the height which is about 20 Km. Now there is a 100 Km window the Patriot can hit things in, 24 seconds for target to cover that ground. So, 16 seconds for the Patriot to go from the ground to 20 Km target. Now, it is going to be less than 100Km due to the zone Patriot is operating in. Still 16 seconds to get to 20 Km up from standing start (Against gravity). Good luck. I suspect the Patriot has less than 8 seconds to get to the target.

Just not possible.
