I do love that however fucked the situation, the House of Commons always retains its sense of humour; a lesson for us all - one of the aspects of the national character that makes me proudest to call myself British.

This tradition comes from when the speaker would report on parliamentary meetings to the King and if the king didn't like what they heard the speaker could be executed. So newly elected speakers had to be dragged to the seat in fear of execution and it's carried on this way as tradition for some reason or another.

I think we have the same tradition in the Canadian house of common. The speaker is dragged by the PM and the opposition leader.
