A New American Imperialism? || Peter Zeihan

American imperialism is not the same as European imperialism. The Europeans wanted power, prestige and economic gain, while the US was in it for security. So, what will this look like for the Americans moving forward?

I was stationed at Diego Garcia for 13 months. The British presence was limited to raising the Union Jack, enforcing customs, and running the British pub at night. Otherwise, the island operates primarily as an American territory, using U.S. currency and vehicle codes — all fueled by Filipino beer.

America> We need a base for national security
Small country> Ok, ok... You can have a military base
America> Great
America 10 years later> Why are we paying for all this defence
Small country> Then leave
America> We need it for national security.
America 10 years later> why are we paying for all this defence
REPEAT

The most sensible statement you made was right at the end. Empires fall because they overreach and those subjugated become hostile.

Canadian water planes are helping LA with its fires. Not complaining and trying to over throw the California government.

Peter, I'm surprised you didn't call for NZ to be occupied so you could hike more often while not leaving the US!

Talks about American imperialism by Trump and discussing it as something viable normalize Russian and Chinese aggression against their neighbors. It's extremely stupid for Trump to have these talks. Extremely stupid!

How could the USA take land and then tell China it can't take Taiwan?

Peter, I'm a retired Navy officer who was assigned to a NATO command in Denmark at the tail end of the Cold War. I totally agree with your assessment of the situation in Greenland, Denmark with Iceland. Damaging our relationship with Denmark (possibly France and Germany too) outweighs any benefit gained by taking over Greenland.

No, it's NOT about defense. Ever since the Cold War, we've had the option to expand our military presence in/around Greenland and don't need to do more than say it needs to be done in order to do so (in other words, NATO and Greenland would rubber stamp it, especially with Russia being Russia, these days). We don't need to acquire Greenland as a territory or state in order to shore up national and global security. But we DO "need" to acquire Greenland in order for the Tech Bros to be able to bring in _Chinese_ mining companies (cheap and have zero concern about human life and environmental health) in order to [grape] their tech sector-dependent resources. In other words, to make all the "meritocrats" richer at everyone else's expense... as usual.

Trump during the election: “We need to stop globalist forever wars”
Trump after the election: “We need this territory and that territory”

On a smaller scale, this lunacy about Panama, Greenland and Canada seems equivalent to carjacking your friendly next door neighbor in their driveway.

There is already a lot of anti-american populism in the EU, not only at the far right & far left, and Trumps talk about taking Greenland and Panama is a gods gift to politicians that use that populism.

To call people in Greenland extremely poor is something of an overstatement!! Unlike the USA, there is free healthcare, free education, pension, maternity leave, 6 weeks paid holiday etc. All things you do NOT get in the USA! (GDP per capita Greenland: USD 57, 116.30 (2021))
For comparison, GDP per per capita Kenya: USD 1, 949.90 (2023)) GDP per per capita US: $81, 695.19 (2023)

Mentioning how it's morally wrong and opposes what are ostensibly the core values of America might have been nice....

That's the problem with running an empire while pretending not to. Eventually someone will not get the memo.

The Canary Islands have never been seized by the US. I wonder whether other claims in this video are equally inaccurate.

I am seventy-eight years old and for my entire lifetime I have perceived America's role in the world being similar to the kid in the schoolyard who tries to unify the vulnerable kids against the schoolyard bullies. While there is occasional friction, the exchange of knowing we will be behind them if the going gets tough creates enough good will that we will have support if we need it. Trump appears to want to be the bully. I don't think he understands the difference between friends and partners compared to subjugated servants.

Panama is not a ‘basket case’
The people of Greenland are not ‘poor’. They have a longer life expectancy than the USA.
Sucotra is an ecological preserve, it is protected and would kill several unique species if developed for military use.

Other than getting everything wrong, this was an interesting video.

Question: how does this man make a living?

How much is imperialism going to cost us? We have to defend it, buy it, etc etc etc. Does it benefit us and them in a way that makes sense for both sides?
