Those settlers believed that this land was meant for “The free world” (themselves); With their ideals being supported by their beliefs in “Manifest Destiny”

Canada can simply join the EU and offset any tariffs. Also, Canada has King Charles as head of state, so the UK and its Commonwealth will immediately come to Canada's aid. As for Denmark, it has a centuries old alliance with the UK via Scotland.

The land the Panama Canal sits on was originally owned by Colombia. The US supported the Panamanians revolt breaking away from Columbia and signed the Panama lease treaty. The new country of Panama only leased the land, and didn’t give their land away. President Carter honored the end of the lease and returned the land to Panama.
