Excellent tutorial. I like to change their water weekly also to simply give them some nice, fresh, clean water. They seem to appear thankful after it's done.

I did about 75% water changes on my 3 feet tank every 3 days without siphoning the base (sand, gravel etc.)
It works, it tooks about 35 minutes to complete.
My tank situated very near to the draining area, so I just uses siphon & a long hose to fill it back.
It's fun to do it everytime.
Don't forget to add anti chlorine because we usually uses tap water.
I'm using top filter, where the sponges & wool filter be apply.
I changes the wool filter every 2 weeks & rinses the sponges filter every after the water changes schedule.
It works, I just rely on the gravels & driftwoods to be as biological filtrations, so far, no problems.
I'm keeping 3 Oscars, 2 plecos & 1 perch.
They looks healthy.

The flower horn tank looks naturally cool with all of that algae and moss. Like right from a pond

Thank you sir! I am rethinking my water change “schedule” process, and will start dialing in the nitrate rate of change to come up with the average time between changes. Of course, the actual water test will determine when I do a water change, but at least I wont be standing over the tank 5 days a week with a calendar in one hand, and a gravel vac in the other.

Thankyou for all your great content. A different approach to water changes but makes perfect sense from a science perspective. Here's a scenario. I haver a couple of heavily planted tanks in which the nitrates never get above 10, and neither should it as the plants obviously act as a good filter all on their own. I still do regular water changes but not necessarily to remove nitrates. This video has me thinking that I can atleast extend the duration between though

Good talk! You left out put aquarium water on plants in garden, pick things from garden eat them and put some in tanks to feed plecos. Fish feed garden, garden feeds me and fish!

In the past I have done exactly how you are describing. I have recently found that my plants love 50 ppm nitrate. The fish don't seem to care. Even spawning. I'm experimenting with allowing the nitrates to go a few days over 40 ppm until they get to 50 ppm for 3 days, then do a water change. The plants are growing and therefore using more nitrates. This is causing water changes to be required less and less. The fish are only exposed to "higher " nitrate level for a few days and the plants love it. If love to hear your thoughts....
