How To Use A Fetal Doppler After 16 Weeks Pregnancy - Dr Gill

Using a fetal, Doppler seems like one of those very specialist skills. However, I would argue that being able to accurately, and reliably detect a fetal heart rate, and separate that from the maternal heart rate is a clinical skill that all practising doctors should be able to perform.

In almost all specialities, you will likely come across pregnant women in your care, and regardless of the medical issue for which you're seeing the mother. There, the majority of pregnant women will be more concerned about the unborn child. In those situations, being able to use a fetal, ultrasound probe is a fantastic tool to help a mother, even if it is merely a temporary measure, whilst you are arranging a specialist obstetric review for definitive reassurance

In this video, we address how you can use the fetal Doppler, in order to listen to a babies, heart sounds.

We highlight the reasons that you may want to listen to a fetal doppler, and highlight approaches to differentiating the maternal from fetal sounds

Here is the link to the BMJ article outlining the issues with patients utilising fetal dopplers at home

________

Please note that there is no ABSOLUTE way to perform a clinical examination. Different institutions and even clinicians will have differing degrees of variations - the aim is the effectively identify medically relevant signs.

However during OSCE assessments. Different medical schools, nursing colleges, and other health professional courses will have their own preferred approach to a clinical assessment - you should concentrate on THEIR marks schemes for your assessments.

The examination demonstrated here is derived from Macleod's Clinical Examination - a recognized standard textbook for clinical skills.

Took me back to my trainee midwife days. Usually I’m here for the ASMR but it’s nice to appreciate the actual clinical skills part for a change. And you’re both so cute together 😊

I'm a GP working as a family doctor in Brazil. Your videos are really well made and they help me review my medical skills, cheers Dr. Gill!

So much better than geeky medics! They are good for a review once you already know the content. Dr Gill is so much better for learning the content.

I remember my doctor using the doppler on me quite a few times throughout my pregnancy and I found it amazing how clear you can hear baby's heartbeat on such a small device. I had HG throughout the entire 9 months, I thought it was normal morning sickness! Spent quite a bit of those 9 months in and out of hospital :( Would never wish HG on my worst enemy! Also it's adorable how proud you are already with this baby 🤣

I’ve been tempted as a pregnant medical student to get a Doppler for my own reassurance, but I haven’t learned how to use it yet and I really don’t want to mess it up. Best to leave it to my OB!

I went to one of my sister's prenatal appointments last year (she was 5 months pregnant iirc), and this was the 1st time I saw this small doppler machine in my whole life... I was really amazed at how you can listen to the baby's heart with such a small device
My nephew's heart was doing well at this appointment, he was born at February 3rd this year and he's so adorable 🥺💖 It's so wild to think he's turning 6 months old in a few days, he's growing up so fast 🤯

Wishing the best for both of you and for the baby, hope you both enjoy parenthood 💖
