During WWII it sailed to India where it served as protection escort ship to commercial fleets to the east of India all the way to South China Sea. Upon its return of this mission back to Meditterean sea the Allied Command Headquarters named it the "Sword of the Meditterean". Despite having participated to two naval conflicts with the Ottoman Empire fleet it managed alone to cause significant damage to many of their ships and a great number of deaths and injuries to their crews while it sustained only one accidental death and one injury. Which is the most positive record of all the ships that participated in operations in WWII.

It's captain admiral Kountouriotis challenged the ottomans by a sending a telegram to the ottoman naval headquarters saying that it's ship is anchored to the island of Lemnos on the northern Aegean and awaits them to engange in naval battle. In case that your ships don't have coal to move notify me to send coal with merchant ships as much as you want !!!
