After spending 8 hours, in the dark, with heavy winds and freezing rain, failing to start a fire with a friggin bow drill, we finally got it lit. Had an instructor slink over, lean in, pull out a bic lighter, and then whisper "never underestimate the power of one of these", flicked the lighter on, and then slinked away.

I carry like 6 different ways to start a fire now.

I'm gonna be real with you Chief, always good to keep a disposable lighter around

The accelerant you added to your tinder pile was a nice touch.

run the circular sparky thing length wise down the top of your thigh so its sparks the whole way. Do this a few times. If it's cold, or wet, or both - this will produce enough heat to dry out your lighter. God Bless.

You always have multiple ways to start a fire in case one fails.

All you have to do is roll the striker a few times on your pant leg and it will work just fine. Just saying.

#1. Your lighter is typically going to be in a dry place. It's not going to get wet.

#2. Once the lighter is dry again, it will light. Doesn't take long either just blow in it a couple of times.

#3. In my 20 years of having a lighter on me, I have never had a bic lighter fail me prematurely.

Grab the lighter from the bottom press the flint roller against a surface(like wood) and roll it like a hot wheels, the friction will dry it in seconds and it will spark again.

I keep both of those and waterproof matches in my kit. Always good to have multiple ways to do things. Different tools for different jobs, don’t make things more difficult than they have to be

I always carry both the rod for emergency and the lighter for convenience when starting a backcountry camp fire when I go sledding.

I tested this, the fuel works fine you just have to let it dry for a minute or two so the flint works. If you can keep your tinder dry, you can keep your lighter dry. If you can't keep your lighter dry then your tinder is too wet to light with a ferro rod.

In a few of his EDC, and survival pack videos he say you absolutely need one or two lighters. But they can fail. The rod will always perform it's function.
