I love that they both had to grow up and find themselves separately before they made sense together. Jo and Laurie were sweet and got on like house on fire, but Jo was not in love with him. People tend to brush off the fact that Jo didn't want Laurie, and that Jo's rejection had this seemingly perfect boy careening off the rails. They were great as friends, and to Laurie, it would be the easiest fantasy fulfillment. But Jo would have been miserable and Laurie would have never have grown up into himself and never loved as he deserved.
