PA vs MD - Why I Chose Physician Assistant Over Doctor

Considering PA vs MD? Not sure whether you should go to physician assistant school or medical school? Only you can make that very personal decision, but here are some things that helped me decide. I highly recommend shadowing as much as possible if you might want to be a PA or a physician. One career isn't "better" than the other, and while they are similar, there are differences in being a doctor (MD or DO) and a PA. My husband went to MD school while I was in PA school, but we were both biology majors, and fun fact, we got married while we were in school!

Wow this is sooo helpful!! I’m a first year college student and exactly in the same boat as you were in undergrad! I’m pretty set on PA while I was originally pre-med but I’m not 100% sure because I still need to shadow people. Pretty impossible with the pandemic but hopefully will be able to soon! Fyi DO school is medical school. MD and DO are both routes to becoming a physician.

How do you get the opportunity to shadow? Do you call a facility up, is it through your school, or?

I wish I would have shadowed before deciding on medicine, or at least med school. I work as a scribe right now in my Junior year and my GPA has been slipping and I have no research experience. I feel drained and wish I would have possibly pursued the PA route instead...I don't know if I'm cut out for med school.
