To everyone saying 9/11, the reason this is considered the deadliest crash is because 9/11 is usually classified under the "Worst Terrorist Accident" category since there was nothing like malfunctions or crew error in that one whereas here it's a direct result of Crew Error.

The fog WASN'T the only thing that caused the disaster. it was the captain of the KLM flight Aswell that did not listen to the flight engineer, which, caused Catastrophy. The Pan Am flight was taxiing on the runway, and the KLM flight was taking off.

My dear reader are you confused in anyway? Here you go

The Tenerife Accident happened on March 27, 1977. When two Boeing 747 planes collided on the runway of Los Rodeos Airport (now North Tenerife Airport.) The collision occurred when KLM Flight 4805 initiated its take off when if was not supposed to. It crashed into Pan Am Flight 1736 the plane supposed to take off. Killing 248 total occupants, 234 passengers, and 14 crew members on KLM 4805. On Pan Am flight 1736 there was 396 occupants, 380 passengers, 16 crew, and 61 survivors.

An investigation by Spanish authorities concluded that KLM thought they were able to take off my Air Traffic Control (ATC) but were not, instead Pan Am was issued to fly. Unfortunately, Dutch investigators realized that it was miscommunications through the radio between ATC and KLM. KLM admitted that their crew that day was responsible and the airline agreed to financially compensate the relatives of all of the victims.

The disaster had a lasting impact on the industry, illustrating in particular the vital importance of using standardized phraseology in radio communications. Additionally, cockpit procedures were examined, which contributed to establishing crew resource management as an essential component of airline pilot training. The joint crew involvement is welcomed throughout airplane operations, and the captain is no longer seen as infallible.

Thank you for reading hope you have a good day/night.

This a tragedy but as long as safety procedure improvements were made they didn’t die in vein. I believe if we had prevented 911 it would have happened later and could have been much worse. Not to say it’s good but to say that all things happen for a reason and if not a reason at least theirs a lesson to be learned from it

March 27, 1977, when two Boeing 747 passenger jets collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport[1] (now Tenerife North Airport) on the Spanish island of Tenerife.[2][3] The collision occurred when KLM Flight 4805 initiated its takeoff run while Pan Am Flight 1736 was still on the runway. The impact and resulting fire killed everyone on board KLM 4805 and most of the occupants of Pan Am 1736, with only 61 survivors in the front section of the aircraft.[2][3] With 583 fatalities, the disaster is the

Terrorist Attack and a plane crash are two different things, those planes were used as bombs deliberately. Think of plane crashes as accidents not intentional disasters meaning to cause deaths

I watched this crash like 15 times or more on A.C.I. (Air Crash Investigation), know every detail of it already

For extra context, an nearby airport(Gran Canaria airport) had been damaged and temeraraly disabled due to the Canary Islands Independence Movement, thus causing a lot of planes to go to Tenerife airport instead.

What about 9/11? I guess that’s technically 4 crashes, but 1 series.

Ok, maybe a terrorist attack doesn’t quite count as a crash, but still, there were deaths and plane crashes.

The Tenerife airport disaster occurred on March 27, 1977, when two Boeing 747 passenger jets collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport[1] (now Tenerife North Airport) on the Spanish island of Tenerife.[2][3] The collision occurred when KLM Flight 4805 initiated its takeoff run while Pan Am Flight 1736 was still on the runway. The impact and resulting fire killed everyone on board KLM 4805 and most of the occupants of Pan Am 1736, with only 61 survivors in the front section of the aircraft.[2][3] With 583 fatalities, the disaster is the deadliest accident in aviation history.

A bomb set off by the Canary Islands Independence Movement at Gran Canaria Airport had caused many flights to be diverted to Los Rodeos, including the two aircraft involved in the accident. The airport quickly became congested with parked airplanes blocking the only taxiway and forcing departing aircraft to taxi on the runway instead. Patches of thick fog were drifting across the airfield, so visibility was greatly reduced for pilots and the control tower.[2][3]

The subsequent investigation by Spanish authorities concluded that the primary cause of the accident was the KLM captain's decision to take off in the mistaken belief that a takeoff clearance from air traffic control (ATC) had been issued.[4] Dutch investigators placed a greater emphasis on a mutual misunderstanding in radio communications between the KLM crew and ATC, [5] but ultimately KLM admitted that their crew was responsible for the accident and the airline agreed to financially compensate the relatives of all of the victims.[6]

The disaster had a lasting influence on the industry, highlighting in particular the vital importance of using standardized phraseology in radio communications. Cockpit procedures were also reviewed, contributing to the establishment of crew resource management as a fundamental part of airline pilots' training.[7] The captain is no longer considered infallible, and combined crew input is encouraged during aircraft operations.[8]
