This scene is heartbreaking but beautiful. That’s probably the first time Anakin has smiled in decades. He looks at Luke with such pride and love. Luke was right about the Emperor being too overconfident. Palpatine just assumes Vader could never betray him, but as we all know, if there’s one thing that Anakin cares about above all else, it’s his family.

It's interesting how Palpatine rapidly changes his proxemics to both Vader and Luke when he has been thrown down the reactor shaft. This shows that he has been thrown down a reactor shaft.

Palpatine was so lost in torturing Luke that he didn't notice Vader betraying him, but when he does he is so enraged that all he could think of was killing Vader, this is why he makes no effort to save himself, even when he's about to be hurled down the shaft.
