Making Summer Camp Affordable for Everyone

Erica Blue’s family couldn’t afford to send her to overnight summer camp. Then a friend paid for her to go the summer between sixth and seventh grades. The experience was transformational. “It changed my perspective on life,” she says. So much so that today, Blue is the CEO of Austin Sunshine Camps. The organization makes summer camp—and all the swimming, s’mores and new friends that go along with it—possible for kids from low-income families in central Texas as well as those in foster care. The camp is completely funded by donations and relies heavily on the generosity of others to help kids have the summer fun they deserve.

I went to a school in a district where a woman had died and left all her money to the children of the district to have 2, 000 dollars for summer camps in their middle school years until the estate ran out. Thousands of kids were able to go to camp because of this, including me. They gave you a booklet to choose from camps within your received budget and you'd go to the ones you liked. This was in Bangor, ME, USA

I am going to summer camp for two weeks tomorrow, and its around 2, 000 per week. So its around 4, 000 dollars for me to go to camp. I never realized how lucky and how privileged I was and now I am so so grateful for my hard working parents providing this type of experience for me.

I live in a rural part of mississippi, and i went to camp Bailey, which is a Christian camp. The “dorms” are shacks that were built in 1945 with no air condition, horrible mosquito nets, and only a 1/2 chance to find a snake in your bag. We woke up early and prayed and had to do a god awful dance. Then we ate breakfast and went to a bible class, Played, went to second class, played, and then went to the last class. Me being the antisocial kid i am, i never played that much. And, the fact that my beliefs in god are questionable. But, the kids never went to Camp Bailey to learn about god, they just wanted no parents for a week. I know kids that chewed tobacco and cursed like sailors. Kids would even get into fist fights. It was Chaos on the third day. Needless to say, some if the best times of my life.

Reminds me of the Tim Hortons Foundation Camps. One time, my husband bought a smiley cookie from the local Tims (all the profit from the sale of those cookies go to the program), and the cashier just gave him a free coffee to thank him for his contribution. The dude told my husband he used to go there as a kid and claimed that it had changed his life. I think it's nice.

That's awesome. I was in Austin 2 years ago. If I had known that program, I should have participated and volunteered for awesome kids
