I feel like Paul while he never showed it always had a respect for ash. He learned from him and taught him something almost every time they met. Sure he proply thinks ash is childish but at the end if the day he still beats gym leaders and champions and Paul admires ash it his own way. When Paul didnt know Ash was a seasoned trainer he was harsher against him. Ash was using his Sinnoh team all the time. Paul was switching between his Johto and Sinnoh. Thats how he was so fast at train and evolve his pokemons. His final team was a mixup with his old pokemons. Thats why he wanted to know which pokemons Ashs going to use in their battle. By the time Ash was in Sinnoh he already been in Kanto Johto and Hoenn. Mixup of that team could easily beat Paul already. But hes proven his strenght by beating Paul with the team hes gathered in Sinnoh only. That made Paul respecr him even more after losing to Ash.

Ironically, this video shows a lot of Paul's development towards the series. When he meets Ash, he thinks of him(Ash) as nothing more than a mediocre trainer with a naive mentality about training pokemon. When Paul realizes Ash has defeated the Battle Frontier, he starts to treat him as an actual rival, to the point where he even helps him save his pokémon from Team Rocket.
