I want to learn to play drums, but I'm not making any progress...

Still stuck at *NOT HAVING A DRUMS* state...

It’s like the old saying: “Fail to plan, plan to Fail”. I’m not sure who said it, but it definitely applies here in the world of drumming! Awesome video!

You don’t talk too much, people listen too little.
And, that is a MONSTER ride!

My biggest hurdle when it comes to learning drums is my parents don't want to hear them.

I still occasionally wear the wrong t-shirt during practice...

Thanks for this! I think that these tips apply to any self-directed learning, of which I do a lot of. My notes on your video:
————————————— Self-Directed Learning- Drums
Have a Learning Plan- Set goals, broken down, w/timeline.
Learn what you need to Play- don’t just learn cool beats/fills, that don’t fit into what you’re playing. Learn songs, and skills that apply to what I’m playing.
Keep Practice Log/Journal- keep track of what I’m practicing, how/when.
Don’t move on too soon from lessons- don’t get bored/distracted. Practice correctly, for enough time/volume.
Practice consistently- set regular times to practice, on your calendar, and do it.

Talkin’ bout practice.... ya that’s right.. practice! Nailed it ST. Thank you. No replacement for it. Either do it and get better, or not.

Stephen, glad to see you made this video, thank you! The biggest one I’ve dealt with as a teacher and player is #2 (🤣). it’s easy to see a lot of blazing lakes online and get confused and overwhelmed about how it should fit into your own playing. Years ago I discovered when watching these types of videos, to decide if it’s just a neat thing to see or does it help me play music? The old guys learned to play music, and most of them are our heroes today. That’s a huge lesson we all need to learn, how to play music. Thanks again, well thought out and delivered message!

I am a "divergent thinker", ie I go off on tangents. My practice time, as a beginner, is essentially just buggering about. I've worked through a basic book, and I think the next step is to get in to some of the classic literature such as Stick Control etc and work through those.

Also the journal tip is very good, help keep me focused and on track with specific goals, exercise etc. Cheers Stephen.

I'm a drummer for 36 years now and I really have not been able to practice like I want over the last 10 years. That's not entirely true. This video made me realize that life takes over sometimes and things like practice get put on the back burner, when I really think about it, I have plenty of time to practice. It's time to get off my butt and just do it. I'm 47 and I've never learned "Rosanna". Well, I ain't going to learn it not practicing. Just a little focus and time and we can all learn anything. Back to the woodshed for me! Thank you!!!!

PRACTICE LOG: So true! Honnestly as a teacher i have one, my students have one. It’s just keeps your mind off of having to remember it. On top of it : it’s a positive feedback loop. You got to love those endorphins shoots :)

I tend to practice the same ‘ol things. Getting in a rut like that can stifle any advancement. Getting to think outside the box is vital.

I've gone farther in my drumming in the last three years when I started learning stuff from YouTube than I ever did on my own just feeling music out all my life. I could always play beats and some fills but I've learned so much since I've started applying myself online.

Right now im mainly working on my doubles. Mostly my left hand to get that second stroke sound smother and get the same sound as the first stroke.

Traditional face-to-face weekly lessons have enabled the most progress for me. Having someone there to observe my progress and technique, and give feedback, is a lot easier than going it alone. It can be difficult for online instructors to really see your technique, due to video latency and camera angle.

From the other side of the online drum lesson paradigm the #1 difficulty I've had is figuring out what I need to work on and in what order.

There doesn't seem to much of a logical development path as compared to many other human endeavors.

And as you said, "you might be able to do some complicated thing but can't play a simple beat in time", which them might lead to discovering that you have some major problem that you have to sort out.
