Best Practices for Online Teaching/Building a Professional Network: Spring 2022

05/13/22 This session presents a set of recommendations and best practices for online teaching and learning. These include course design, accessibility, syllabi design, rubrics, online presence, netiquette, and more. Additional resources presented. This is followed by a presentation on how to build and maintain a professional network addressing the importance of fostering quality relationships that will lead to expanding your faculty net. Facilitated by Cira Montoya Olsen (Extended University, UTEP) and Laura Watkins, Ph.D. (GCC, Arizona).

The West Texas Regional Collaborative, part of the NSF INCLUDES: Aspire Alliance Alliance, seeks to develop inclusive and diverse STEM faculty across the nation by aligning and reinforcing hiring, professional development, and retention practices of STEM faculty at institutional, regional, and national levels simultaneously. Our goal is to build regional collaboratives between 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities to prepare future STEM faculty who mirror and inspire the diverse community they serve.

Each semester, we welcome a cohort of graduate students and pair them with community college faculty to explore the possibility of a teaching career at two-year institutions by developing a meaningful mentoring relationship. Our fellows attend classroom observations, professional development webinars and workshops, participate in peer-review activities and create a final, inclusive teaching portfolio.

The WTRC is currently conformed by the collaborative effort of The University of Texas at El Paso (lead), The University of Texas Permian Basin, El Paso Community College, Howard College, Midland College, and Odessa College. Funded by the National Science Foundation.
