Today I am looking at the latest stable release of Debian, Debian 11 (Bullseye). Debian 11 is a huge update from Debian 10 with over 72% of the packages being modified and over 11,000 new packages added to the distribution.

I switched to debian because of stability and reliability. With the gnome desktop environment, there is nothing better than it!

Debian 11 Bullseye is a great release. Added contrib non-free to each repository line then enabled experimental to get GNOME 40. Viola running smooth as silk.

'Arch is a great distribution, it's just not right for me.' It's the perfect answer to the: 'By the way I use Arch.'
Although I don't use Debian on my desktop, a new release always puts a smile on my face.
Great video.

I've been looking forward to your take on Debian 11 and am not disappointed. Have tried it for the last 3 days (since release). It's good (for me anyway).

longterm Linux user and "old head" here. I can totaly relate to your conclusions. I prefer stability and security above anything for my everyday work environment. Debian is home since the late 90s and I doubt I can ever call any of the shiny or fancy non-boring distributions my home. I sometimes tinker with things like Arch or Void (I am really impressed by Void btw) but not for production, and no matter how far I move into other things (because bored), I always come home to my good old Debian.
I can switch on my old toaster and just do work, no need to fiddle about with it or spend the next 10 hours to find out what broke my system and how to fix it :)
I know what I like and I like what I know and others need not approve 🙂

Excellent video, imho! It was like looking over the guy's shoulder as he installed and worked with Debian 11. I'm of an age where I don't wan't the bells and whistles so much as I want to be able to use my distro to get stuff done, so I want the OS to effectively get out of the way and simply allow me to do what I want to do without any hassles or problems. So I can really relate to the remarks made towards the end of this video. Whilst I've used distros that are based on Debian, I've never actually used Debian itself, and I think that now is the time to put that to rights.

After a while on Fedora and having some issues on my older laptop, finally went back to Debian. Haven’t really used it since 10, but I realised I always come back to it eventually. I just set up a basic GNOME install with some extensions, with Flatpak enabled for when I need a newer version of some tool. Even though it’s not the latest GNOME it feels smoother than anything else and I know I’ll never encounter a bug. It’s a really amazing distro for anyone who just wants their computer to work all the time.

There are 5 branches of Debian old stable, stable, testing, unstable and experimental. I have used Debian since Woody and have never had a crash or major problem. I have always been happy with Debian.

The good Debian function is used backports for update packages.

I upgraded my stable Buster to Bullseye using the Debian Wiki guide a couple of days ago, keeping the Xfce desktop on my old Dell laptop. My NVIDIA setup did not survive and Bullseye booted up with no kernel modules loaded, resulting in a lower screen resolution. So I deleted the NVIDA packages and the screen returned to its maximum resolution using the open source drivers. Then I found out that the pavucontrol program would not connect with the pulseaudio server, so I purged pulseaudio and reinstalled it. This fixed that problem. After that, things have gone smoothly, with everything else seemingly working. I don't know the root causes of these problems, and frankly don't have the energy to puzzle it out, as Debian is now my deep backup to my primary Fedora installations. Also, I'm starting to warm up to openSUSE Tumbleweed on my "experimental" laptop...

I have not evaluated Debian, not even as a live DVD. So this was new to me and quite interesting. I learnt something. Many Thanks.

Hey DJ,

Debian is my first love. It is still a distro I’ll return to at need. However, my computer needs are relatively simple. I prefer more minimal systems these days. Further, Linux is going in a direction, generally, that isn’t for me. Currently, I’m running Slackware and FreeBSD both with dwm. Like you, I am no longer drawn to the bright shiny newness. Generally, the stable versions have all I want or need. Thank you for another look at Debian. Take care, stay safe, and enjoy!

Dj, I love your videos. But you really need to buy a Dynamic microphone (Like SM7B or RE20) to avoid capture all this noise from background ambience. Kisses for you from Brazil!

I like your opinion about Fedora and the direction of Fedora's way :)
