The iron maiden was a Victorian invention designed to make medieval people look like barbarians. Oubliettes existed, though, so I'm not sure why Victorians insisted on inventing stuff in addition.

I heard of an oubliette for the first time playing Final Fantasy 11. There was an area called a Bostaunieux Oubliette. You could only enter it from a trap door at the top and there was a long drop. It was terribly difficult to explore and worse to escape. You could find a single way out that dumps you into a lake exit, but it was so dangerous and hard to navigate in there even with a map that most people just let monsters kill them to escape. I can see the developers did a great job incorporating and oubliette into their game.

A oubliette was being emptied in the 1970's and found a amazing discovery. They found a skeleton wearing a 1930's wrist watch.

A lot of them were not big enough to stand up straight, but not wide enough to sit. This would make the victims stand with bended knees. It doesn’t sound too bad in itself, but after a while this would cause untold amounts of pain.

There’s one at Warwick Castle in England. If I remember correctly, it is a horizontal space just below the floor about the size of a coffin… can’t imagine what it was like to be stuffed in there.
