in the oubliette when you look forward you see a gutter, it is for air or connection with the drain to a privy

It's horrifying when the torture equipment gets explained on the tour especially 'The Rack'.

4 Amazing Things & 1 Bummer…1) Alice is an incredibly appealing storyteller on multiple levels 2) Her crew does a fantastic job of taking us on the journey with her 3) All the subject matters are always fascinating 4) The use of Carmina Burana is top notch!…the one bummer…the shorts are too short 😝…a maximized Alice is always preferable & most assuredly always welcomed. ♥️😊 ♥️

There are lots of violent criminals today who would benefit from a jail like this instead of cushioned air conditioned comfort

Quite a horrible hole to be placed in.
Can you imagine the PTSD.
Awful.

Thank you Alice.

I seriously doubt the story that the dungeon was to house prisoners taken at Poitiers. It is recorded that a large number of prisoners were taken at that battle, but prisoners were only taken if they were good for ransom or useful as hostages. No prisoner of lesser rank than a knight would be taken, and the rules of medieval warfare were clear on this - prisoners for ransom or hostages had to be kept in the style to which they were accustomed, and in return they had to give their word (parole) that they would not attempt to escape, they lived as members of their captor's household until they were ransomed or exchanged, they certainly would not have been kept in a dungeon.
If you captured a noble prisoner during the Hundred Years War you had won the lottery, but if you could not afford to keep him, or you did not want to wait for his friends and family to raise the ransom you sold him to someone further up the social scale, often for a grant of land. King Edward III bought quite a number of the prisoners, including of course King John II of France - the jackpot!.
