Is the Reverb G2 or Quest 2 still good for flight simulation?

The Quest 3 is out and now everyone is asking if you should upgrade or wait.

DCS, MSFS , and XP12 are the flight sims I tested and share with you my thoughts.

Thanks for the video. Question please. I have a 10900K/3090GPU and currently use the Reverb G2. I purchased the Quest 3 for Christmas after hearing from many pilots that the clarity is comparable with the G2. Unfortunately, I'm not finding that to be the case. Two issues; 1. Clarity of text on buttons or glass screens and 2. Brightness and colour is overdone to the point that nothing can be read on panels with bright light on them and colours are too saturated to the point that is looks very "gamey". In contrast the G2 is spot on with clarity and colour intensity. Appreciate any comments you might have.

Great first impressions video Jose and it's great to see you posting content again. I've just had a fantastic 1 hour flight in the Quest 3. No doubt about it, if you have the GPU, it's a great display. SOOO smooth too using VD. My issue is most people won't have a high end GPU, and in this instance, they'd still be better off with a DP headset such as the G2 or Pico Neo 3 link. I wish I could keep flying but this headset is by far, the most uncomfortable headset I've ever worn. Meta really messed up here.

There are a few of us (including Get Your Game On and Sim hanger Mark) who can see SDE. I guess I'm just spoiled by the Crystal, Aero and Beyond now.

Great video and thanks for the shout out. Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks for the video! I came from the Rift S and it´s such a big difference and looks great now! I can read all the tiny text on the screens in the cockpit now in DCS. Running it on a 4080 with airlink and got 72 fps on the DCS counter with the airlink, DCS PD 1, 3. Noticed, that the quality became much better after turning off DLSS, much sharper image.
It´s a great device as it´s not bound to the PC but can be used for other funny stuff.

I got the Q3 on release day. My only real complaint is the face padding. I had the Q2 for a few years (mostly used for flight sim) and the pad they sent out to fix the Q2 is pretty comfortable. The Q3 digs into my cheek bones and I have to keep moving it around in a never-ending attempt to find a comfy spot.

The image is good enough that I won't waste my money on anything more expensive. At least not for flight sim. Movies look great! 4k videos are pretty impressive to watch vs. my Q2s.

Thx for your Vid Jose. And for championing the VR flightsim hobby helping it grow.. we need that.

With regards to reviewing headsets for MSFS use, I think YT's in generel are missing one key aspect.. Sure The rig that is used are important ofc. But all too often another important element are the kind and type of aircraft it is reviewed in. 3 tests should be made. Stock Cesna 172, Payware turboprop, payware airliner pmdg/fenix. These would give 3 very different reviews im sure.

Have had the Q3 for 10 days now, and must say im not happy with it. After buying face cushion, new strap, new battery life strap, HQ link cable, TP link dedicated router and the headset itself im $1000 down the rabbit hole. Not complaining, just saying its something to be aware of.

I have been through the simhanger and Steves settings recs, + tampered myself and so far im say at 70ish percent the quality and performance compared to the G2. I run a 139 +4090 rig so top notch there.

I DO however push the sim right to the edge with addons, peripherals, motion rig, vatsim and the Fenix A320 and that is where I feel the Q3 might be too weak. I see a lot of color bleed in text on displays making them harder to read. blown out whites when the sun is out. low quality of the clouds though they are set high. and I could go on. the sim looks like a vanilla version of XP11 outside tbh.

Im not saying there aren't a solution, just haven't found it yet but will keep tweaking, but compared to the G2 right now its not matching it in visual quality and performance. Side by side settings wise I am getting 23 fps in the Q3 (link AND cabled) compared to G2's 40 fps on direct side-by-side testing.

the Q3 is the headset I want to love... Have missed the UI and controllers since I left the Oculus 2 for the G2.

Love the lack of sweet spot hunting
Love the ability to bring windows EASILY into VR to chat with friends, read messages and just browser while in cruise.
Love the controllers and their build quality
Easy to take screenshots or vids and share with friends.
The freedom when not being cabled (longer flights needs cable to charge)
AND ofc my kids love it too, so don't see me getting rid of it again.

Just wish I could get the same performance out of it as I do with the G2. Im sure it has it under the hood, but is locked out of it due to the lack of direct graphics card input.
Im also sure it is up to par if you just enjoy flying "simpler" aircrafts and aren't a certified sim-nut like me :)

I will keep it around though, one never knows if a solution comes up.. (yeah, also tried fps and smooth flight add ons, they just throttle the sim down to much to work for me).

If you are looking for something that has the same quality and performance as you get with the G2 in the sweet spot, the Q3 ain't it if you want to fly complex a/c.

I have a quest 2 and just got the quest 3 from best buy. The Quest 3 has one bright pixel, and mura is very visible when the brightness is turned up. Positives are the lenses are really sharp all of the way to the edges. I also was able to plug in a usb ethernet adapter into the Quest 3, and it works with Virtual Desktop. The passthrough and AR demo game are pretty amazing. The only issue I have in MSFS over link cable is some strange tearing at the extreme edges when moving my head quickly. I am going to do some in depth flying in DCS, MSFS and Flying Circus in the Quest 3, and then switch back to the Quest 2. If I don't feel a huge loss in quality when going back to the 2, i will probably return it.

People forget that while the Reverb G2 hardware was made by HP, the software which is literally called Windows Mixed Reality was made by Microsoft. It is very normal that Microsoft Flight Simulator, which obviously was also made by Microsoft lol, is much more optimized for the G2. People also forgot that when the MSFS 2020 VR option was launched, it was exclusive to the G2 in the beginning. So I dont think it is surprising that it works better in the G2 than on the Meta headsets. However, people found a way to increase the bitrate in Quest headsets to up to 940 which is insane and apparently just gives the edge back the Q3 over the G2.

Steve's first impressions have largely been revised and he can get a clear image and good performance. I can also see the SDE effect quite clearly but it doesn't distract too much, colours are just not quite as solid as they might be, do some AB testing with your G2, look at light colours and you can see. From the performance in MSFS I'm getting better performance using Wifi than Steve is using cable (I believe). I've got a 2500 Mbps 6e Wifi router using VDXR in VD and I can tell you, although I'm using ASW and DLSS I can run Ultra settings @ over 3000 per eye and it looks fantastic. If it was a choice of buying a £719 HP Reverb G2 which is discontnued or the Quest 3 at £479, for me it's a no brainer even if you are a simmer. Only caveat for me is the comfort, the G2 is very comfortable and you do need an elite strap or one of the many third party solutions - be aware though I use a powered link cable, if you buy a headstrap with a battery pack, you can't use the link cable for data, you can only use a cable for proviing additional power - so you would be stuck with the Wifi solution.

Thanks for the honest review Jose. I was hoping to upgrade from the Q2 for MSFS, but will hold off for the time being… let’s hope there’s a way of getting MSFS to run better 🤞

I was skeptical about the Quest 3 and PC gaming. It is really good. Like amazing with Virtual Desktop.

I don't have anything yet but want to get into VR for MSFS and being away from a PC. Sound like the Quest 3 is the way to go and hope it improves in the near future. Probably wait for Black Friday deals for now. Thanks for the video and perspective.

Hey, good to see another enthusiast from Florida. I work at an FBO in South Florida, and have family in the Tampa, Clearwater area. Next time I am in town, we can hit Big Storm Brewery, and shoot the breeze about VR simming and gaming. I do want to upgrade from my Rift S to the quest 3. I do believe the clarity for the price is what I am going for. My only concern is I fly for hours, and want to be sure that the link cable charges the headset while plugged in. Can you answer that for me?

Thank you Jose, after Steve's less than enthusiastic review of the Q3 i was rethinking purchasing it, now i believe I'm just delaying, new hardware requires driver tweaks. I'm thinking the Q3 is suffering from these initial growing pains. The performance in DCS cemented my belief that the MSFS issues will be dealt with, and that waiting for black Friday seems now more bearable.

Thanks for this. Currently considering taking the plunge into VR flight simming since I can no longer fly. This gave me a lot of good info. Thanks! New sub.

Didn’t notice screen door at all. Virtual Desktop works like a champ to stay wire-free.

I have the Quest Pro, Quest 3 and the G2 and both Quests are better than the G2 in MSFS for me, although it took me a while to dial in my settings with the Pro when I got it last year.
I use the cable, with encode bitrate set to 500 in the Oculus debug tool, sharpening set to normal, distortion curvature low.
I don't use the OpenXR Toolkit as that conflicted and created some extra sharpening that made it look a bit stencil like.
I the Rift app I have the slider all the way to the right, 5408 x 2896.
In the sim I use TAA, render resolution set to 115, I think my Steam render is set at 150.
In Nvidia settings for MSFS I set Anisotripic to x16 which forces LOD bias to clamp, which seems to reduce shimmering.
I also keep AMD's FSR quite low in the sim, around 40 as it doesn't look good sharpened.
My guess is you have some sharpening from NIS or FSR conflicting a bit with Meta's own sharpening.

It looks great for me, although I prefer the Quest Pro because of the local dimming and contrasts.
I can't stand to use the G2 any more, it's like having a tiny cone of circular clarity in the centre about 30 degrees across, and being almost legally blind outside of that. Pancake all the way!

Not a single review mentions the increased latency of the Reverb G2 compared to every other headset, yet that is its defining flaw. Conversely, one of the many superior qualities of the quest 3 is it's absolute rock solid positioning of the virtual world and virtual objects, in other words it has the lowest latency of any headset.

The cable is expensive because it is not just a copper USB-C, it is a hybrid fiber optic/copper cable.
