Cotman watercolors are great, same with the other brands that fall into that category, like Van Gogh, Lukas studio, Aquafine and so on. High quality enough to create really nice pieces, but inexpensive enough that you're not going to feel bad about using them up even as a beginner. I always tell people now to go straight to those types of paints and skip the super cheap ones, as those are just going to cause a lot of frustration. It's this irony that super cheap supplies are directed at total beginners, but then the only people who can get any decent results out of them are people who already have a lot of experience.

Hi great job Amy! I used artist grade Schminke and Winsor and Newton professional paints. I find those are the best! However they are $100 or more for a 12 pan set.

As usual, I love your editing and camera angles in this video!! Wow, even the price jump to $30 gives us the option of much better quality paints! They really do mix together well compared to the $3 paints. Both of your paintings turned out nice, but the colors are definitely more vibrant with the more expensive paints. I used to use Cotmans, but now I use Sennelier Professional now and they cost me an arm and a leg. I also noticed they require much more building up as they go on pretty translucent at first!

Great video, I like especially that you compared between student grade and the cheap ones as most do the jump to professional and the comparison can only lack. But showing, that good student grade paints are already a big step to good supplies is so important. I enjoyed watching the video a lot. Thankk you!

Great job on this video Amy :) Great comparison for both types. I actually have those cheap watercolor paints lol They are the "dry round tablet looking ones" that I was given to me years ago. I finally used them for a plein air painting at the beach in hawaii and turned out great.

I know the difference. I refuse to use student grade for my framed baby portrait works for lightfastness reasons. Some student grade watercolor is pretty good like VanGogh and Schmincke Academy. But the others in my opinion, not so good. You get what you pay for.

Tbh imo, sometimes, it looks like it can also be based on context. (I have never used watercolor though lol) The cheap paint seems useful for a bit more control in terms of saturation. I'd use the cheap paint for more daytime bright compositions. And maybe the more pricey watercolor for Nighttime themed art. Perhaps like using the expensive and cheap together might be a gamechanger. 🙌
