Ever wonder how video games get their sound effects? We go behind the scenes of Halo, one of the world's most popular video games, to find out how the game builds everything from its weapon sound effects to its sci-fi environment.

Creating the sound effects for the latest release, Halo Infinite, required creative Foley and field recording techniques to capture and distort real-world sounds that they can then use out of context in the game.

Halo Infinite's lead sound designer Kyle Fraser and senior sound designers Robbie Elias and Jomo Kangethe break down the techniques used in destinations as far-flung as Tasmania, an airport runway, and a vintage farm machinery heritage site.

They walk us through the sound effects for vehicles, weapons, and destruction in the game, along with the detailed ambiance and environmental sound for the multiplayer maps.

Halo Infinite is available now with Xbox Game Pass.
Watch "Halo," the new TV series, on Paramount+.

Infinite’s sound design is really fantastic. This was really interesting to see their thought process

Imagine being inside the mind of a sound designer. Like "I could make a campfire using twigs and bacon" or "I wonder if I could take my wife screaming at me and slow it wayyy down so it sounds like a titanic ocean monster". Must be one of the most fun jobs you can have.

Despite some of infinite's problems, the sound design is top notch. Its a case of them doing the sound design so well that it isn't usually noticed by the players since it sounds so natural. Sound designers are one of the biggest unsung heroes of gaming, when they do their job right, it's hard to tell they did anything at all.

8:46 “The team says that in a future update the pug sounds will return for something really special.”
I think we know what it’s going to be used for and it gives me a big grin on my face.

Sound design seems like such a fun field, but it’s amazing how creative and smart these people are.

The slinky made me laugh.

I once bought a metal slinky a long time ago and did notice when messing with it that I could make some rather star wars blaster-ey sounds with it. I also pondered if anybody actually used one to make energy weapon sounds.... and I'm happy to see that people do!

Some people will fight me on this, but I truly believe sound design is a form of art. You pretty much have to get creative to find that specific sound.

I remember being a kid playing ratched and clank and being so satisfied by everything the game rewards, the sounds, the effects, the feelings of doing pretty much anything... that for an almost 20 year old game

Halo got me into game development 10 years ago and viewing tag data from Halo CE gave me such an intense in-depth look of proper game development. It taught me there was surface profiles of each material and often 10+ sounds for each sound, per material, which leads down a rabbit hole of what are materials, oh they are textures, controlled by shaders, wrapped onto geometry, that is 3d modeled, that is sometimes rigged, then animated, then programmed by controller inputs. Undoubtedly video games at their core are one the greatest, complex, and fun human achievements, and I really must thank Halo for starting me on my journey. Halo Infinite is so fun!!

Using a machine from 1918 for a tank in the 2500s... For some reason that sent chills down my back, seeing our world change so Incredibly much in just 40 years, that's was the 80s, 40 years ago, and it's almost like an alien world compared to society today. In our entire human existence we've been something like 94% hunters and gatherers, 5% farmers, and right now, we are in the 1% of human history in this modern medicine filled, concrete skyscraper covered beautiful planet. A little off topic from the video but I can't wait to see what the future holds for us

As someone from Tasmania, I always wondered why some sounds in Halo felt so familiar
