What are the Humanities?

What are the humanities? It's a broad and challenging question. What role do the humanities play in our individual lives and the extended relationships we have to our communities and beyond?

Ideas, and how we express them, are the essence of humanity, and become shared artifacts of our human story.

Ideas put into action help to preserve our heritage while propelling us into the future. Ideas ground us and secure our sense of place while we explore the unknown.

The humanities are a collection of human ideas put into action, and they reveal us to ourselves. They bridge our differences and bind us together. They buttress our collective glory and inform our communal mistakes. They sing, chant, record, and relay our lovely, messy, shared human story.

Ideas are embodied in the myriad of hues, and in the labor, and in the creations that flow from humanity.

Ideas in action are evidence of a vibrant, complex existence. They invite us to dive into the deep waters of human ideas and expression to find ourselves, and each other, in the exploration.
