What are the Humanities? What Makes Us Human?

Directed by Annlin Chao, supported by researcher Jo Sofaer and fellows from Humanities European Research Area (HERA), this short film project brings together global animation talents and humanities researchers, exploring and discussing why the humanities matter. The humanities are often underrated by their importance, yet they are the key to supporting human-kind through all times, remembering who we are, not mentioning the essential role during this global crisis.

From a world of pure emptiness and nihility, the character is dragged into unpredicted but extraordinary worlds. The worlds ahead waiting for her seem to be imaginary, yet strangely familiar: archaeology, anthropology, history, religion, literature, art and music…They are the worlds of humanities.

Besides the very obvious morphological and genetic indicators of the human species, I fail to see what the "humanities" can add to the argument. Are there humans who are not human? Is there a sub species of human? Are some humans more human than others? There is, of course, the incredible arrogance of the "humanities" claiming to be arbiters of just how human we are and of course claiming their own superiority.
