So… I had lost about 30lbs and kept it off over year but was eating really low calories. I work out with a trainer 3x a week for 1 hr. Strength training. So in Sept I realized that I was just NOT eating enough for how much I work out. I started a reverse diet and did it REALLY slow… I added 100 calories a day for a month, then another 100 for a month. But in the process of doing this, my brain said “work out more”. So now even though I was adding calories, I started working out 6 days a week with 2x on my gym days. I was afraid I’d gain weight….I got up to about 2k a day in calories, but I was burning about 2400-2700 calories every day. I put on weight!!! I eat soo healthy. So this week I had enough. I started a stretching/yoga routine on my off gym days. I dropped my calories to 1400 during the week and will go back to 2k on the weekend. Don’t know if this is a great solution. Just ordered your book… looking for advice. I’m 49, 5’5” and now about 135 (maybe… i was 120. I haven’t gotten on the scale because I KNOW I put on muscle mass and I don’t want to be thrown off by the number I see, because I’ll just think of the weight and not the fat amount). I’m trying to use the measurements and how I look/feel as my guide. May go get a dexa. Any advice would be welcome.. my biggest issue is not the workouts, I actually like doing them…. It’s my calories. I don’t know how much, how much less? I eat about 120-140g protein daily. I’m pretty lower carb.(under 100) Lower fat. My only real vice is protein bars. But I have Atlas, No Cow or IQ bars usually. Other than that, no real processed food.
Oh and I’m peri menopause… joy! Any suggestions would be appreciated!! ❤

Scales and numbers are irrelevant when you’re going to the gym and building muscle. I started going to the gym 3 months ago every single day, I used to weight 119 and now I weigh 124 but I look very toned and more slim in the legs :). YOU are going to gain weight because you are growing mass and you will weigh heavier. If you see results in your body, don’t worry about what the numbers on the scale tell you. In fact it’s actually working, bevause when you have more muscle you weigh more! Keep up the work and don’t give up everyone!!

You may also have to consume more water, make sure to stay hydrated especially since you’re working out, and get enough sleep and eat correctly. Youre body is going through changes so make sure you treat it right :)

I started CrossFit. Love it. Doing it for a month now. Felt so much better but I gained 5 lbs after a month of working hard. I felt sad about this.

Yes, so true. Step by step, do not stress the exercise. Myself I got so excited about yoga, but my stress levels went up when I worked out six-seven times a week. Five was plenty. It was not the exercise that was the reason, my body could handle it, as I gradually got to that point. The problem was that there were other things I also needed to focus on, like work, eating healthy, spending time at home relaxing, just having some time to unwind and not need to go anywhere, or do anything. As soon as I stopped weekend workouts, my sleep improved, my diet improved, my concentration improved. I do however do some simple strength exercises at home in areas where I have imbalances, but I do these randomly throuhout the day as they are not an exercise, more physical therapy. My life is more managable, and my weight loss has started to go into the right direction again. Mental rest is important too, so giving myself time to process helps me stay on track with other things in my life as well, and keep my sleep to eight hours and feel like I have time to enjoy as well.

I just started performing arts at college, and part of our dance classes involve intense cardio workouts + abs, so I’ve gone from doing little to no exercise to intense exercise 3x a week. As a result, I’ve gained almost 5lbs and my period is irregular :( I’m hoping it’ll go down once my body gets used to that level of exercise. Unfortunately, there’s no way for me to work out less because it’s a part of what I’m studying

I recently added in weight training into my exercise routine. I alternate between weights and cardio. I was a little gutted when I stepped on the scales this morning to see id gained nearly 3lbs. I'm trying not to let it discourage me

My son and I have started going to the gym every morning. I’m trying to create healthier habits for my kids. Still working on my youngest daughter, but I’ve noticed that I am gaining weight like you mentioned. I started out around 137 and am definitely 140+... after about 10 days of 50-60 min cardio workouts! 😱. Not my goal. I wanted to get my cardio back in check so I can take some 60 min weight training classes at the gym. Any ideas? I’m 5’3”-4”ish and 48 years old.

I'm not a woman I am a man but I'm having the same issue. I'm eating clean and watching my calories. One meal a day. I'm eating protein and salad 🥗 I'm so confused as to why I'm gaining weight and not losing.

My diet is eating less carbs and sugar and much more protein and fat without surpassing my daily dose of calories.

Hi Dr. Beth. I'd like to ask for the best work out and diet balance advice. I've gained 8-10 pounds and would like to lose that much weight. I work in the office, mostly sitting down. I eat tuna melt or egg sandwich with whole wheat. I take 30 min walks at lunch around 3 times a week or go to the gym 3 times a week for 30 minutes. At night, I try to eat more protein, vegetables and healthy fats like avocado. Recently, I strained my right forearm muscle from just a 10lb power ring. I think I have an endomorph body type. I also feel more tired from workouts and diet compared to before. I feel frustrated if I should lessen working out or focus on eating healthier to lose weight. I feel like if I lessen my workout, my arms and legs will lose muscle and become fat.

Hi! I work out everyday, 6 days a week. Cardio everyday and ab workout after and lift weights. I weighed 165 and I lost 20 pounds but I gained 2 pounds. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’m dieting and exercising and I just started taking count of my calories. I want to lose weight not gain weight. I currently weigh 147.
